Technical Dossier
The Danfoss FCD 322 series is a decentralized variable frequency drive (VFD) platform engineered for motor control in distributed automation architectures. Designed for installation directly at the motor or in the field cabinet, the FCD 322 eliminates long motor cable runs and reduces panel space requirements. The series has achieved significant installed base across global heavy industry sectors including chemical processing plants, offshore oil & gas platforms, refineries, water treatment facilities, and pulp & paper mills. Its IP66/IP67-rated enclosure variants allow direct field mounting in wash-down and outdoor environments, a critical requirement for petrochemical and food-grade processing lines. The FCD 322 operates on 3-phase 380–480 V AC input and covers a power range from 0.25 kW to 7.5 kW, making it the standard decentralized drive choice for pump, fan, and conveyor motor control in distributed plant topologies.
The FCD 322 was introduced as part of Danfoss's Drives division decentralized product strategy, succeeding earlier FCD 300 platform variants. The core architecture is built around the VLT® drive technology stack, sharing firmware and parameter structure with the centralized VLT® AutomationDrive FC 302 series, which significantly reduces engineering overhead when mixing centralized and decentralized topologies in a single plant. Early FCD 322 units shipped with RS-485 Modbus RTU as the primary fieldbus interface. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced native PROFIBUS DP and DeviceNet option card slots, followed by EtherNet/IP and PROFINET IO support via the MCO 305 option module. The FCD 322 enclosure design evolved from IP55 (panel-mount) to IP66 and IP67 (field-mount) variants, with the suffix encoding in the order code (e.g., STR1 = stainless steel enclosure, D0F00 = no brake chopper, no RFI filter) providing precise configuration identification. Units manufactured after 2015 incorporate updated IGBT modules with improved thermal derating curves, extending operational life in high-ambient-temperature installations. The FCD 322 series entered the mature/end-of-active-production phase; Danfoss has transitioned new designs toward the VLT® Decentral Drive FCD 302 and the VACON® NXP platform. However, the FCD 322 remains in active field service at thousands of installations globally, and long-term spare parts and repair support remains commercially critical.

As the FCD 322 series has transitioned out of active Danfoss production, OEM channel availability for specific order codes has become inconsistent. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for FCD 322 units and sub-assemblies, including IGBT power modules, control cards, display units, and fieldbus option cards. Our sourcing network covers surplus stock from decommissioned plant assets, factory-refurbished units, and new-old-stock (NOS) from authorized distributor liquidations. For end-users operating FCD 322 drives in critical process loops — where a drive failure results in unplanned downtime — DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support including cross-reference to compatible FCD 302 or VACON NXP replacement units with parameter migration assistance. All sourced FCD 322 units are traceable to original Danfoss manufacturing documentation. Customers requiring long-term maintenance agreements (LTMAs) for multi-site FCD 322 fleets are encouraged to contact our technical sales team directly.
Each FCD 322 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional test protocol specific to the decentralized drive architecture. The test sequence includes: (1) visual inspection of the enclosure IP rating integrity — gasket condition, cable gland sealing, and corrosion assessment on stainless and grey enclosure variants; (2) DC bus capacitor ESR measurement and pre-charge circuit verification; (3) IGBT gate drive signal integrity test under no-load switching conditions; (4) control card boot sequence verification with firmware version logging; (5) fieldbus communication test — Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS DP, or EtherNet/IP depending on the unit's option card configuration; (6) full-load motor simulation test at rated output frequency (50 Hz / 60 Hz) with thermal monitoring; (7) parameter restore to factory default with documentation of any non-standard parameter sets found. Units that fail any stage are quarantined for component-level repair or parts recovery. Test records are retained and available to customers on request.
