Technical Dossier
The ELAU SM (Servo Motor) series represents the primary motion axis drive component within the ELAU PacDrive automation ecosystem, developed by ELAU AG (Germany) and subsequently integrated into the Schneider Electric product portfolio following the 2006 acquisition. SM series motors are engineered for high-dynamic, precision-positioning applications and are deployed across global heavy industry sectors including packaging machinery, chemical processing plants, oil refineries, and food & beverage production lines. Their synchronous permanent-magnet design, combined with native compatibility with the ELAU PacDrive C400/C600 controllers and MC-4 servo drives, established the SM series as a standard motion component in multi-axis coordinated systems throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Installed base remains substantial in facilities operating legacy PacDrive architectures, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational requirement.
The ELAU SM series was introduced as part of the PacDrive platform in the late 1990s, designed to operate exclusively within the ELAU CANopen-based motion bus architecture. Early SM variants (SM-070, SM-100) targeted compact, low-inertia applications with flange sizes conforming to IEC 72 standards. The mid-generation SM-140 and SM-180 frames introduced higher torque density and expanded encoder options, including resolvers and multi-turn absolute encoders (Hiperface, EnDat), to support more demanding axis configurations.
Following Schneider Electric's acquisition of ELAU in 2006, the SM series continued production under the Schneider Electric / Lexium brand umbrella, with cross-compatibility maintained between legacy ELAU MC-4 drives and newer Lexium 32/62 platforms via firmware adaptation. As of the mid-2010s, the SM series entered its end-of-life phase, with Schneider Electric designating the Lexium SH/SHD series as the recommended migration path. However, due to the mechanical and electrical interface differences between generations, direct drop-in replacement is not always feasible without drive parameter reconfiguration or mechanical adapter plates, making original SM series units the preferred solution for installed-base maintenance.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked configurations within the ELAU SM servo motor series. Configurations are defined by frame size, continuous stall torque, winding voltage, feedback type, shaft configuration, brake option, and connector orientation.

The ELAU SM series has been formally discontinued by Schneider Electric, with OEM new-stock availability effectively exhausted through standard distribution channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for end-of-life ELAU SM series motors, sourced through certified industrial surplus channels, decommissioned machinery, and controlled factory-pull programs. All units are catalogued by full part number string, including winding code, encoder variant, shaft configuration, brake option, and connector orientation, ensuring exact-match fulfillment rather than approximate substitution.
For facilities operating PacDrive C400 or C600 systems with SM series motors, DriveKNMS provides: verified surplus stock of common SM-140 and SM-180 configurations; encoder replacement and recalibration services for Hiperface and resolver variants; winding resistance and insulation testing prior to dispatch; and documented traceability records for each unit. Customers requiring long-term maintenance contracts for multi-axis PacDrive installations are encouraged to contact DriveKNMS to discuss consignment stock arrangements.
Each ELAU SM series motor processed through DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection protocol specific to the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the series. Inspection stages include: visual examination of the motor housing, shaft seal integrity, and connector body condition; winding resistance measurement across all three phases with phase-to-phase balance verification; insulation resistance testing at 500V DC (minimum 100 MĪ© acceptance threshold); encoder signal verification using a compatible ELAU MC-4 or Schneider Electric Lexium drive in test mode, confirming absolute position data integrity for Hiperface variants; bearing condition assessment via manual rotation and vibration signature check; and brake engagement/release force measurement for B1 brake-equipped variants. Units that do not meet all acceptance criteria are quarantined and documented. No unit is dispatched without a completed inspection record.
