Technical Dossier
The Control Techniques Unidrive SP series — manufactured by Control Techniques, a division of Emerson Industrial Automation — is one of the most widely deployed AC variable-speed drive platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale water treatment facilities, the Unidrive SP platform covers output ranges from 0.37 kW to 1.9 MW. Its modular architecture, open-loop and closed-loop vector control capability, and broad fieldbus compatibility made it the reference platform for process-critical applications throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The UNI3403 is a drive control board (main control PCB) used within the Unidrive SP frame size 3 range, responsible for PWM signal generation, parameter storage, I/O interfacing, and drive protection logic.
Control Techniques introduced the Unidrive SP platform in the early 2000s as the successor to the original Unidrive Classic series. The Classic series used a proprietary single-board architecture with limited fieldbus options; the SP generation introduced a modular slot-based system supporting SM (Solutions Module) expansion cards for PROFIBUS-DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, and encoder feedback. Frame sizes 1 through 6 cover single-phase and three-phase input from 200 V to 690 V. The control board architecture remained largely consistent across frame sizes, enabling cross-frame parameter compatibility via SmartCard. In later production runs, Control Techniques introduced the Unidrive M series as the modern successor, with enhanced onboard Ethernet and IEC 61131-3 PLC functionality. However, the Unidrive SP remains in active service at thousands of installed sites globally, and replacement control boards such as the UNI3403 remain critical spare parts for lifecycle maintenance programs.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked components within the Unidrive SP ecosystem. Each entry reflects a distinct functional role within the drive system:

The Unidrive SP control board — including the UNI3403 — integrates a multi-layer PCB with surface-mount DSP, EEPROM parameter storage, and a dedicated gate-drive signal path to the IGBT power stage. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all Unidrive SP control boards prior to dispatch: (1) Visual inspection for capacitor bulge, PCB delamination, and solder joint integrity under 10× magnification. (2) Power-up verification using a controlled bench supply to confirm internal PSU rail voltages (+5 V, +15 V, −15 V, +24 V). (3) Functional test in a frame-matched drive chassis to verify parameter read/write via SmartCard, analog I/O response, and digital input logic. (4) Communication slot verification — SM module slot continuity and bus signal integrity check. (5) Thermal cycling soak test for boards recovered from high-ambient installations. All boards are dispatched with a test report and a 12-month warranty against functional failure under normal operating conditions.
