The DeltaV control system was introduced by Fisher-Rosemount (later acquired by Emerson Electric) in the mid-1990s as a scalable, node-based DCS designed to replace legacy proprietary systems. The original MD (Multi-Drop) controller established the foundational backplane and I/O bus architecture. The MD Plus generation extended this architecture with a 64 MB RAM baseline, dual-port Ethernet controller network interface, and support for up to 750 I/O points per controller node. The MD Plus introduced the KJ2003 controller card family, which became the standard controller module across thousands of installations worldwide.
Subsequent generations—the MD Plus Controller with redundancy kit (KJ2003X1-BB1 paired with KJ2003X1-BA1), the MQ controller, and eventually the PK controller—maintained backward compatibility with the DeltaV I/O subsystem, allowing facilities to upgrade controller hardware without replacing field wiring or I/O marshaling cabinets. As of 2026, the MD Plus series has entered the end-of-active-production phase, with Emerson directing new projects toward the DeltaV PK and DeltaV Compact controllers.
