Technical Dossier
The Emerson DeltaV distributed control system (DCS) is deployed across the full spectrum of global heavy industry, including petrochemical complexes, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil and gas platforms, LNG terminals, and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. Since its commercial introduction in 1996, DeltaV has accumulated an installed base exceeding 30,000 systems worldwide, making it one of the most widely maintained DCS platforms in continuous-process industries. The VE4022 / KJ3243X1-BB1 Profibus DP module is a field-proven I/O interface card that bridges the DeltaV controller backplane to Profibus DP field device networks, enabling integration with third-party valve positioners, variable-frequency drives, and intelligent field instruments operating under the IEC 61158 standard.
DeltaV has progressed through three distinct architectural generations since 1996. The first generation (S-series controllers, 1996–2004) established the redundant controller and I/O subsystem model using proprietary FOUNDATION Fieldbus and Profibus DP communication cards. The second generation (MD/MD Plus controllers, 2004–2014) introduced the KJ-series I/O cards, including the KJ3243X1-BB1 Profibus DP interface, and expanded network bandwidth to support larger node counts per controller. The third generation (DeltaV v14+ with Electronic Marshalling and CHARM I/O, 2014–present) introduced the CHARacterization Module (CHARM) architecture, which eliminates traditional marshalling cabinets and allows field wiring to connect directly to I/O cards without pre-assignment. Legacy KJ-series modules such as the VE4022 / KJ3243X1-BB1 remain fully supported under DeltaV v13.3 and earlier, and are compatible with MD, MD Plus, and S-series controllers. Sites running DeltaV v14 in mixed-mode configurations may retain KJ-series I/O subsystems alongside CHARM I/O. Compatibility constraints arise primarily at the controller firmware boundary: KJ3243X1-BB1 cards require DeltaV v7.3 or later and are not forward-compatible with the CIOC (Cabinet I/O Controller) architecture introduced in v14.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked components within the Emerson DeltaV KJ-series and VE-series module range. Each entry is classified by functional category.
Profibus DP / Fieldbus Interface Modules
Analog I/O Modules
Digital I/O Modules
Controller & CPU Modules
Power Supply Modules
KJ-series and VE-series modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane bus interface, onboard EEPROM configuration storage, and communication-layer firmware. DriveKNMS applies the following verification protocol to all DeltaV modules prior to dispatch:
