Technical Dossier
The Emerson SP Series represents a family of programmable logic controller (PLC) and safety instrumented system (SIS) I/O and control modules deployed extensively across global heavy industry. Installations span petrochemical complexes, offshore platforms, nuclear power facilities, LNG terminals, and continuous-process refineries. The SP Series is recognized for its deterministic scan-cycle performance, redundant backplane architecture, and compatibility with Emerson's broader DeltaV and PROVOX control ecosystems. Its modular form factor allows field engineers to replace individual I/O cards without full rack shutdown, a critical requirement in facilities operating under 24/7 uptime mandates.
The SP Series originated as a discrete I/O expansion platform for Emerson's legacy PROVOX distributed control system, introduced in the late 1980s. Early modules operated on a proprietary parallel backplane bus with fixed-address slot assignment. Through the 1990s, Emerson migrated the series toward a serialized backplane protocol, enabling hot-swap capability and online diagnostics — features that became standard with the SP2000-generation hardware.
The SP2400-generation (including SP2401) introduced 24 VDC digital output channels with solid-state switching, replacing earlier relay-based output cards. This generation aligned with IEC 61131-3 programming standards and introduced HART pass-through on analog variants. By the 2010s, Emerson positioned the SP Series as a long-lifecycle spare parts catalog, with active support maintained through authorized distributors. The series entered its mature/end-of-active-production phase circa 2015–2018, with Emerson directing new projects toward the DeltaV S-series and SCADA-compatible RX3i platforms. However, installed base volumes across legacy facilities ensure continued demand for SP Series spares through at least 2035.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for SP Series modules that have reached end-of-active-production status. For facilities operating legacy Emerson PROVOX or early DeltaV installations, sourcing replacement SP Series cards through OEM channels is no longer reliable. DriveKNMS sources SP Series modules through decommissioned plant auctions, authorized surplus channels, and direct acquisition from facilities undergoing control system migration.
All SP Series stock held by DriveKNMS is cataloged by revision level and firmware version where applicable. Customers requiring specific hardware revisions for backplane compatibility — a common constraint in SP2400-generation DO modules — can specify revision requirements at the time of inquiry. DriveKNMS provides revision-matched units where stock permits, and documents revision details on all shipping paperwork. Long-term maintenance contracts covering annual SP Series spare parts allocation are available for facilities with multi-year operational commitments.
SP Series modules present specific test challenges due to their multi-layer backplane connector interface and serialized bus communication protocol. DriveKNMS applies the following test procedures to all SP Series units prior to shipment:
