GE Fanuc RX3i (IC695) Series Technical Notes

The GE Fanuc PACSystems RX3i platform, identified by the IC695 prefix, is one of the most widely deployed distributed control architectures in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil & gas platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants, the RX3i backplane-based system supports mixed-voltage I/O, high-speed CPU processing, and deterministic real-time communication. The IC695SPF002 is a PROFIBUS DP Master communications module within this ecosystem, enabling the RX3i controller to act as a Class 1 PROFIBUS DP master with up to 125 slave devices per network segment at data rates up to 12 Mbps. Its role is critical in legacy DCS/PLC hybrid architectures where PROFIBUS remains the field-level communication standard.

The Evolution of RX3i (IC695) Architecture

The PACSystems RX3i platform was introduced by GE Fanuc Automation (later rebranded as GE Intelligent Platforms, then Emerson) as a successor to the Series 90-30 (IC693) and Series 90-70 (IC697) families. The RX3i introduced a universal backplane (IC695CHS012, IC695CHS016) capable of accepting both PCI-based high-speed modules and legacy serial-bus I/O modules, providing a migration path from older GE platforms without full system replacement.

Early RX3i deployments (circa 2004–2010) relied on CPUs such as the IC695CPU310 and IC695CPU315, which supported basic ladder logic and function block programming under Proficy Machine Edition. The architecture evolved through the IC695CPU320 and IC695CPU330 to the current IC695CPE330 and IC695CPE400, which support IEC 61131-3 structured text, C-block programming, and EtherNet/IP native communications. Communication modules like the IC695SPF002 were designed for the mid-generation RX3i systems and remain in active service in plants where PROFIBUS DP field devices (drives, valve positioners, transmitters) have not been migrated to PROFINET or EtherNet/IP. Compatibility constraints exist: the IC695SPF002 requires firmware-compatible CPUs and is not supported on the CPE400 platform without additional configuration. End-of-life designation has been issued by Emerson for several IC695 communication modules; however, installed base volumes ensure continued demand for spare and replacement units through at least 2035.

Quality Control for the IC695 / RX3i Range

RX3i modules present specific test challenges due to their dual-bus backplane architecture (PCI high-speed bus + legacy serial I/O bus) and the variety of communication protocols supported. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IC695 units:

  • Backplane bus integrity test: Each module is seated in a live RX3i chassis (IC695CHS012) and verified for correct enumeration on both PCI and serial backplane segments.
  • Firmware version verification: Module firmware is read and compared against the GE Fanuc compatibility matrix for the target CPU revision. Mismatched firmware is updated where tooling permits.
  • Communication loop test (IC695SPF002 specific): The PROFIBUS master port is tested against a reference slave device at 1.5 Mbps and 12 Mbps to confirm DP cycle integrity, GSD parameter exchange, and diagnostic telegram response.
  • Thermal soak: Units are operated at 55°C ambient for 4 hours under active I/O scan to screen for marginal components.
  • Visual and mechanical inspection: Connector pins, backplane edge connector, and module latch are inspected against IPC-A-610 Class 2 workmanship standards.
