Technical Dossier
The GE Fanuc VersaMax IC200 series is a modular programmable logic controller (PLC) platform deployed across global heavy industry, including petrochemical plants, nuclear power facilities, oil refineries, and continuous process manufacturing. Introduced in the late 1990s as a successor to the Series 90-30 architecture, the VersaMax system established itself as a mid-range automation backbone capable of handling distributed I/O, high-speed discrete control, and analog process loops within a single unified backplane ecosystem. Its compact carrier-based form factor reduced panel footprint while maintaining the I/O density required for large-scale process installations. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of nodes globally, with active deployments in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The IC200 series remains a critical spare parts target for facilities operating legacy DCS/PLC hybrid architectures where full system migration is not economically viable.
The VersaMax IC200 platform was formally released by GE Fanuc Automation in 1998, designed to bridge the gap between the high-end Series 90-70 rack systems and the entry-level Micro PLC line. The architecture is built around a carrier-based I/O bus: I/O modules plug into dedicated carriers (CHS series), which connect via a local bus to a CPU or Network Interface Unit (NIU). This modular topology allowed engineers to configure systems from 8 to 64+ I/O points per local station without rewiring.
Compatibility note: IC200 modules are not cross-compatible with IC693 (Series 90-30) or IC695 (RX3i) backplanes. Carrier type (standard vs. compact) must match the module form factor. Firmware versions on CPUs must be validated against the programming software (Proficy Machine Edition) version in use at the site.

VersaMax IC200 modules present specific test challenges due to their carrier-based bus architecture and mixed analog/discrete I/O configurations. DriveKNMS applies the following verification protocol to all IC200 units processed through our facility:
