GE Fanuc VersaMax Series Technical Notes

Q: How are RFQ terms confirmed?
A: Quantity, required condition, documentation needs, destination and sourcing route are confirmed during RFQ review before quotation.

The Evolution of VersaMax Architecture

GE Fanuc introduced the VersaMax platform in the mid-1990s as a successor to the Series 90 Micro PLC line, targeting applications requiring distributed I/O expansion beyond the constraints of a single rack. The architecture is segmented into three primary subsystems: the CPU carrier (IC200CPUE05, IC200CPU001, IC200CPU002), the local expansion bus (using Expansion Transmitter/Receiver modules), and the remote I/O network (via Genius Bus or Profibus-DP adapters).

Early revisions of the expansion bus used isolated differential signaling (IC200ERM001 class). Later revisions introduced non-isolated variants — including the IC200ERM002 — optimized for cost-sensitive local rack expansion where ground isolation between racks is maintained at the panel level. The IC200ERM002 operates as the receiver end of a local expansion link, pairing with the IC200ETM001 transmitter module. This transmitter/receiver pair extends the VersaMax backplane across physically separate carrier assemblies within the same control cabinet.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete VersaMax Parts

Q: How is condition confirmed before quotation?
A: Available condition, photos, test records and documentation are checked according to the requested model and sourcing channel before a formal RFQ response.

Quality Control for the VersaMax Range

VersaMax expansion bus modules — including the IC200ERM002 — present specific test challenges due to their dependency on active backplane communication with a paired transmitter module (IC200ETM001) and a functioning CPU carrier. DriveKNMS employs a dedicated VersaMax test bench replicating a complete operational carrier assembly.
