Technical Dossier
The GE IS420 series represents a core subset of the Mark VI and Mark VIe Distributed Control System (DCS) platform, developed by GE Energy (now part of GE Vernova). These modules are deployed across global heavy industry installations including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants, offshore platforms, and pulp & paper facilities. The IS420 designation covers a broad range of I/O, controller, communication, and power conditioning modules that interface directly with the Mark VI/VIe VME-based backplane architecture. Installed base spans hundreds of facilities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, with many sites operating equipment commissioned between 1995 and 2015.
The IS420 series traces its lineage to GE's Speedtronic Mark V turbine control platform, which transitioned to the Mark VI architecture in the mid-1990s. The Mark VI introduced VMEbus-based I/O modules with deterministic real-time processing, replacing earlier relay-logic and analog control panels. IS420 modules were designed to operate within the VCMI (VME Controller Module Interface) and VTUR (Turbine Controller) rack assemblies, communicating over the IONet (I/O Network) and the redundant IONET Ethernet backbone introduced in Mark VIe.
The Mark VIe generation (introduced circa 2005) extended IS420 compatibility to Ethernet-based I/O using the EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP protocols, while retaining backward compatibility with legacy IS420 I/O wiring termination assemblies (WTAs). This dual-generation compatibility is a critical factor for plant engineers managing mixed-vintage control rooms. As of 2026, the IS420 series is in the mature-to-end-of-life phase; GE has transitioned new projects to the Mark VIeS and Mark VIeC platforms. However, the installed base remains extensive, and OEM spare parts availability has declined, making third-party MRO sourcing essential for lifecycle extension programs.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced IS420 series modules. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional role within the Mark VI/VIe control architecture.

GE has formally discontinued active manufacturing of the majority of IS420 series modules. OEM lead times for remaining new-old-stock (NOS) units frequently exceed 26 weeks, and many part numbers have been removed from GE's active price list entirely. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for IS420 lifecycle support, covering the following sourcing categories:
DriveKNMS maintains traceability documentation for all IS420 units, including test reports, revision history, and country of origin certificates, to support plant maintenance records and regulatory compliance requirements.
IS420 modules operate on a VME backplane with high-speed parallel bus communication. Standard visual inspection and power-on testing are insufficient to validate module integrity. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IS420 units prior to dispatch:
