GE Series Six Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of Series Six Architecture

The GE Series Six was introduced in the early 1980s as a successor to the GE Series One and Series Three platforms, incorporating a 16-bit processor architecture and a proprietary backplane bus that supported high-speed inter-module communication. The platform was structured around a rack-and-slot topology: a central CPU module communicated with discrete I/O, analog I/O, and specialty function modules via a shared backplane. Early revisions used parallel backplane communication; later revisions introduced enhanced bus arbitration to support multi-rack configurations via the Genius Bus or Series Six I/O Link.

Quality Control for the Series Six Range

Series Six modules present specific test challenges due to their proprietary backplane bus protocol and age-related component degradation. DriveKNMS applies a structured verification process to all Series Six inventory:

  • Backplane connector inspection: pin alignment, oxidation removal, and contact resistance measurement on all edge connectors
  • CPU module functional test: program load/execute cycle verification using a Series Six rack test bench with known-good I/O modules
  • Analog module calibration check: channel-by-channel output verification against NIST-traceable reference instruments
  • Power supply load test: full-rated load burn-in for a minimum of 4 hours with thermal monitoring
  • Communication module loopback test: Genius Bus BIU modules verified for correct node addressing and data integrity under simulated bus load
  • Visual and X-ray inspection for capacitor condition on CPU and power supply boards, given the age profile of Series Six hardware
