The Mitsubishi MELSEC FX Series is one of the most widely deployed compact PLC families in global heavy industry. Installed across chemical processing plants, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, petroleum refineries, automotive assembly lines, and water treatment infrastructure, the FX Series established a benchmark for compact, high-reliability programmable logic control from the early 1980s through the 2010s. The FX-EEPROM-4 is a 4K-step EEPROM memory cassette designed to retain ladder logic programs without battery backup, making it a critical component for installations requiring non-volatile program storage in harsh or remote environments.

The Evolution of FX Series Architecture

The FX Series underwent multiple generational transitions across four decades. The original FX and FX0 sub-families (circa 1981–1990) established the compact form factor and cassette-based memory expansion interface. The FX2 and FX2C generation (early 1990s) introduced expanded I/O capacity and enhanced communication options. The FX1S, FX1N, and FX2N generation (mid-1990s to 2000s) became the dominant installed base, with the FX2N supporting up to 256 I/O points and a broad ecosystem of special function modules. The FX3U, FX3G, and FX3S generation (2006–2015) introduced USB programming ports, built-in Ethernet options, and high-speed pulse outputs. The current FX5U / FX5UC generation (2015–present) uses a fundamentally different architecture with iQ-F platform compatibility and is not backward-compatible with legacy FX memory cassettes.

The FX-EEPROM-4 is specifically compatible with FX, FX2, FX2C, and select FX2N base units. Compatibility with FX3 and FX5 generations requires verification against the specific base unit model. As the FX2 and earlier sub-families have been discontinued, the FX-EEPROM-4 is now exclusively a maintenance and lifecycle-extension component.
