Technical Dossier
The OMRON CQM1 is a compact, modular programmable logic controller series that has established a significant installed base across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical plants, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing lines, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, and refinery control infrastructure. Introduced in the early 1990s as a successor to the C200H family for mid-range applications, the CQM1 series offered a self-contained rack architecture with a fixed backplane, supporting up to 32 I/O modules per CPU unit depending on configuration. Its deterministic scan cycle, ladder-diagram programming via SYSMAC-CPT and CX-Programmer, and robust DIN-rail mounting made it a standard selection for OEM machine builders and process automation integrators throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Despite reaching end-of-life status, the CQM1 remains operational in thousands of legacy installations worldwide, creating sustained demand for spare parts, replacement CPUs, and I/O expansion modules.
The CQM1 series was designed around a single-rack, fixed-backplane architecture where the CPU unit integrates the power supply, processor, and I/O bus controller into one housing. Early CPU variants such as the CQM1-CPU11-E and CQM1-CPU21-E provided limited program memory (4K–8K steps) and basic I/O capacity, targeting simple machine control. The V1 revision series — including the CQM1-CPU43-V1 and CQM1-CPU45-V1 — introduced expanded program memory (up to 32K steps), extended data memory (DM), and enhanced instruction sets including floating-point arithmetic and PID control, positioning the CQM1 for more complex process applications.
Communication architecture evolved from RS-232C host link (SYSMAC WAY) in early units to peripheral port + RS-232C dual-port configurations in later CPUs, enabling simultaneous programming terminal connection and host computer supervision. The addition of dedicated communication adapter modules (e.g., CQM1-SCB41-V1) extended the platform to DeviceNet and CompoBus/S fieldbus networks, aligning the CQM1 with distributed I/O architectures prevalent in the late 1990s. The CQM1H series subsequently replaced the CQM1 with an enhanced inner board slot for function expansion, though the CQM1 backplane and I/O modules are not cross-compatible with CQM1H inner board accessories. Facilities migrating from CQM1 to current OMRON NX/NJ or CP2E platforms must account for full I/O rewiring and program conversion, as no direct migration path exists.

OMRON officially discontinued the CQM1 series, and new production units are no longer available through authorized distribution channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested, refurbished, and new-surplus CQM1 modules to support facilities that cannot justify a full platform migration. Our sourcing network spans manufacturer-certified refurbishers, decommissioned plant asset liquidations, and bonded warehouse stock across Asia, Europe, and North America.
For CPU units such as the CQM1-CPU43-V1, DriveKNMS provides battery replacement, firmware verification, and full functional test prior to shipment. For I/O modules, each unit undergoes point-by-point channel verification. Lead times for common SKUs are typically 3–10 business days; rare variants may require 2–4 weeks sourcing. Long-term maintenance contracts covering annual spare allocation are available for facilities with multi-unit CQM1 installations.
The CQM1 backplane bus operates at 5V DC internal logic with a proprietary parallel I/O bus protocol. Quality verification for CQM1 modules at DriveKNMS follows a structured test protocol:
All units ship with a test report and 12-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions.
