The Yokogawa NFAI series represents a core family of analog input modules deployed within Yokogawa's field control station (FCS) architecture, primarily integrated into the CENTUM VP, CENTUM CS 3000, and ProSafe-RS distributed control systems. These modules are installed across critical global infrastructure including petroleum refineries, petrochemical complexes, LNG terminals, nuclear power auxiliary systems, and large-scale chemical manufacturing plants. The NFAI series handles 4–20 mA and voltage-based analog signal acquisition with high-density channel configurations, making it a standard reference in heavy industrial I/O design. Installed base counts in the hundreds of thousands of nodes globally, with active deployments spanning facilities in Japan, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.
The NFAI module lineage originates from Yokogawa's transition away from the earlier CENTUM XL and μXL platforms in the mid-1990s, when the company standardized on a modular, node-based FCS architecture. Early NFAI variants were designed for the CENTUM CS platform (circa 1993–1998), featuring parallel backplane communication and limited channel density. With the introduction of CENTUM CS 3000 (1998), the NFAI series was re-engineered to support Vnet/IP-compatible node communication, improved EMC shielding, and higher channel counts per slot.
The CENTUM VP generation (2008–present) introduced the current NFAI1xx-Sxx naming convention, where the numeric suffix denotes channel count and the -S01 / -S02 suffix indicates safety integrity level or hardware revision. Modules such as the NFAI143-S01 are designed for 16-channel, 4–20 mA current input with HART pass-through capability on select variants. Backward compatibility between CENTUM CS 3000 and CENTUM VP node cabinets is maintained at the backplane level for most NFAI variants, though firmware and ESB (Enhanced Signal Bus) revisions must be verified before cross-generation substitution.
As of 2024, the NFAI series has entered a mature/end-of-active-production phase for several sub-models. Yokogawa continues to provide lifecycle support under its Long-Term Parts Supply (LTPS) program, but lead times for new manufacture have extended to 16–26 weeks. This makes third-party certified refurbished stock a primary sourcing channel for maintenance operations.
