The Evolution of FX Series Architecture

The FX Series was introduced by Emerson (then operating under the Control Techniques and Emerson Industrial Automation brands) as a successor to earlier analog servo amplifier platforms. Early FX units used analog command inputs (±10 V DC) with resolver feedback, targeting point-to-point positioning in packaging and assembly machinery. Mid-generation revisions introduced RS-232/RS-485 serial interfaces and expanded the indexer table capacity, enabling more complex multi-step motion profiles without external PLC intervention. Later variants added encoder feedback compatibility alongside resolver inputs, broadening the range of compatible servo motors. The FX Series operates on the Emerson proprietary serial command protocol, which is incompatible with CANopen, PROFIBUS-DP, or EtherCAT without an optional gateway module. This architectural isolation is the primary compatibility challenge when integrating FX drives into modern fieldbus-based control architectures. Current Emerson (Nidec) equivalents in the Unidrive M and Digitax HD families do not offer direct drop-in replacement — motion program migration requires re-commissioning.
