Technical Dossier
The Emerson KJ3002X1 series is a family of thermocouple and analog input modules designed for the Emerson DeltaV distributed control system (DCS). These modules are deployed across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil and gas platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants. The KJ3002X1 platform occupies a critical position in process automation infrastructure: it provides the primary interface between field-level thermocouple sensors and the DeltaV controller subsystem, enabling high-accuracy temperature measurement and closed-loop process control. Installed base counts for this series run into the tens of thousands of nodes worldwide, making long-term spare parts availability a primary operational concern for plant maintenance engineers and reliability teams.
The KJ3002X1 series was introduced as part of the DeltaV S-series I/O subsystem, succeeding earlier analog input architectures that required dedicated signal conditioning hardware external to the controller cabinet. The KJ3002X1 integrates signal conditioning, cold junction compensation, and analog-to-digital conversion onto a single module footprint, reducing panel space requirements and wiring complexity. Early variants (BA1, BB1) supported a limited range of thermocouple types (J, K, T) with 8-channel density. Subsequent revisions expanded thermocouple type compatibility to include R, S, B, E, and N types, and introduced 12-channel configurations (BG1, BG2) to increase I/O density per carrier slot. The BG2 variant, including the specific assembly KJ3002X1-BG2 12P1731X082, represents a mature revision with enhanced noise immunity and improved cold junction compensation accuracy. Compatibility with DeltaV controller versions v7.x through v14.x has been validated; however, integration with DeltaV Live (v15+) requires firmware verification at the controller level. As the DeltaV platform has transitioned toward the Electronic Marshalling (CHARM) architecture, the KJ3002X1 series has entered a maintenance and lifecycle phase. Emerson no longer actively develops new hardware revisions for this series, but continues to provide firmware support. Plants operating legacy DeltaV S-series cabinets face a long-term sourcing challenge for these modules, as OEM production volumes have declined significantly.
