The Evolution of DeltaV KJ3000 Architecture

The KJ3000 series was introduced as part of Emerson's DeltaV S-series I/O platform in the early 2000s, replacing legacy PROVOX and RS3 field termination assemblies. The initial architecture used passive terminal blocks (KJ3201, KJ3203 families) paired with active I/O cards mounted on the DeltaV I/O subsystem carrier. This two-component model—terminal block plus I/O card—allowed field wiring to remain undisturbed during card replacement, a critical advantage in continuous-process environments.

By the mid-2000s, Emerson expanded the series to include intrinsically safe variants (KJ3241, KJ3243) for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area installations, compliant with ATEX and IECEx standards. The introduction of the Electronic Marshalling concept (circa 2012) with CHARM I/O modules created a parallel architecture, but the KJ3000 terminal block infrastructure remained the dominant choice for brownfield expansions and system upgrades where existing cabinet layouts could not accommodate CHARM carriers.

As of 2024, the majority of KJ3000 terminal block models are in the mature-to-declining phase of their product lifecycle. Emerson has not formally announced end-of-life for the series, but new project specifications increasingly reference CHARM or DeltaV Compact Controller architectures. For existing installations, long-term maintenance support—including third-party spare parts sourcing—is the primary procurement driver.

Quality Control for the DeltaV KJ3000 Range

The KJ3000 series uses a passive terminal block architecture with active signal conditioning on the paired I/O card. Quality verification for these components requires functional testing of both the terminal block wiring integrity and the I/O card's analog/discrete signal processing circuits.
