Technical Dossier
The Emerson (formerly Epro) PR6423 series is a family of eddy current proximity transducers widely deployed in heavy industrial rotating machinery protection systems. These sensors are integral components of Emerson's machinery protection infrastructure, operating within the CSI 6500 ATG and Bently Nevada 3500 series monitoring frameworks. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, and large-scale chemical processing facilities, the PR6423 series provides non-contact displacement and vibration measurement for turbines, compressors, pumps, and generators. The series is recognized by plant reliability engineers globally as a long-lifecycle, field-proven transducer standard, with installed bases spanning decades of continuous operation.
The PR6423 series was developed under the Epro brand, which was subsequently acquired by Emerson Process Management. The core operating principle is eddy current (inductive) sensing: a high-frequency oscillator drives a coil in the probe tip, generating an electromagnetic field. When a conductive target surface enters this field, eddy currents are induced, loading the oscillator and producing a voltage output proportional to the gap distance.
Early PR6423 variants were designed for use with dedicated extension cables and CON series signal conditioners (drivers/oscillators), forming a three-component system: probe + extension cable + conditioner. This architecture remains unchanged in modern variants, ensuring backward compatibility across generations. The series supports both 8 mm and 11 mm probe diameters, with cable lengths standardized at 1 m, 3 m, 5 m, and 9 m to accommodate various machine frame geometries.
As industrial standards evolved, the PR6423 series was validated against API 670 (Machinery Protection Systems) requirements, making it the default choice for turbomachinery OEM specifications. Later revisions introduced improved EMI shielding and extended temperature ratings to support installations in high-ambient environments such as gas turbine enclosures. The series interfaces directly with Emerson's CON011, CON021, CON031, and CON041 conditioner families, as well as third-party monitoring systems accepting -24 VDC powered, voltage-output proximity probes.
For plants operating legacy Bently Nevada 7200 or 3300 series monitors, the PR6423 probes are cross-compatible when paired with the appropriate conditioner and cable assembly, provided the system sensitivity (V/mm) is matched. This cross-compatibility has extended the operational life of PR6423 installations well beyond the original product lifecycle.

The PR6423 series has entered the mature-to-declining phase of its product lifecycle. Emerson has progressively shifted its proximity transducer portfolio toward the PR9268 and PR9376 series for new installations. However, the installed base of PR6423 probes in operating plants remains substantial, and replacement demand continues across the aftermarket.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of PR6423 probes, extension cables, and CON series conditioners sourced from verified industrial surplus channels, OEM overstock, and decommissioned plant equipment. All units are inspected prior to listing. For discontinued configurations — including specific cable lengths, thread variants, and hazardous-area certifications — DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support through cross-reference matching and functional equivalent sourcing.
The PR6423 proximity transducer system requires functional verification at the system level — probe, extension cable, and conditioner must be tested as an integrated assembly, not as individual components. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all PR6423 units:
Gap-voltage linearity test: Each probe-conditioner pair is tested across the full measurement range (0.25 mm to 2.25 mm gap) using a calibrated non-ferrous target fixture. Output voltage is recorded at 0.25 mm increments and compared against the published sensitivity curve (7.87 V/mm ±10%).
Oscillator frequency verification: The CON021 conditioner oscillator frequency is confirmed within the specified band (1.0 MHz ±5%) using a calibrated frequency counter. Deviation beyond tolerance indicates conditioner degradation.
Cable continuity and insulation resistance: Extension cables are tested for conductor continuity and insulation resistance (minimum 100 MΩ at 500 VDC) to detect moisture ingress or mechanical damage.
Connector integrity check: All MIL-spec and M12 connectors are inspected for pin corrosion, thread damage, and sealing integrity.
Thermal soak: Units destined for high-temperature applications are subjected to a 2-hour thermal soak at rated maximum temperature prior to final gap-voltage verification.
