Technical Dossier
The PR6423 series traces its lineage to the Bently Nevada and Epro sensor platforms, both of which were absorbed into the Emerson Automation Solutions portfolio. Early-generation PR6423 probes used a fixed-cable, single-piece construction with a 5 mm or 8 mm tip diameter and were calibrated exclusively for AISI 4140 steel targets. Subsequent revisions introduced modular extension cable compatibility (TQ020 series), allowing field-replaceable cable assemblies without recalibration of the probe body — a critical improvement for installations in confined turbine bearing housings.
The architecture is based on a passive LC oscillator circuit embedded in the probe tip. The driver/oscillator electronics are housed in a separate proximitor (CON021/CON041), connected via a coaxial extension cable. This distributed topology isolates the active electronics from high-temperature zones, extending sensor service life in environments exceeding 120°C ambient. Later variants introduced EMI-hardened cable shielding and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 certification, enabling deployment in explosive atmospheres without additional barriers. The PR6423 series is now in a mature/end-of-active-production phase; Emerson's current active catalog references the PR9268 and PR9376 series as functional successors. However, the installed base of PR6423 sensors remains extensive, and direct form-fit-function replacements are the primary procurement requirement for maintenance operations.

Each PR6423 sensor processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured verification protocol specific to eddy current probe technology. The probe tip inductance is measured at 25°C and compared against the factory calibration curve for AISI 4140 steel targets. Cable continuity and insulation resistance are verified across the full cable length using a 500 V DC megohmmeter, with a minimum acceptance threshold of 100 MΩ. The coaxial cable characteristic impedance is checked to confirm compatibility with the designated CON021/CON041 proximitor input. For ATEX-certified variants (suffix -030), enclosure integrity and cable gland torque specifications are inspected against IECEx documentation. Sensors that pass all verification stages are issued a DriveKNMS inspection record and shipped with original or equivalent technical documentation.
