Technical Dossier
The FATEK FBS Series is a compact, high-density programmable logic controller platform manufactured by FATEK Automation Corporation (Taiwan). It has established a significant installed base across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical plants, water treatment facilities, power generation stations, and discrete manufacturing lines throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The FBS architecture is characterized by its modular backplane design, which allows engineers to configure systems ranging from standalone micro-PLCs to distributed I/O networks with up to 512 I/O points per base unit. Its deterministic scan cycle, robust EMI shielding, and wide operating temperature range (0–55°C) make it a standard specification in environments where reliability over multi-decade operational lifespans is a procurement requirement.
The FBS Series was introduced in the early 2000s as a successor to FATEK's FB Series, addressing demand for higher I/O density and improved communication flexibility. The original FBS platform used a proprietary FATEK communication protocol over RS-232/RS-485 at up to 115,200 bps. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced Ethernet TCP/IP communication adapters (FBS-CBEH), CANopen master/slave modules, and PROFIBUS-DP interfaces, enabling FBS controllers to integrate into multi-vendor DCS environments without gateway hardware.
The FBS CPU lineup evolved from the entry-level FBS-10MA (10 I/O, relay output) through mid-range units such as the FBS-32MA and FBS-60MA, to high-density configurations using the FBS-24XYR and FBS-24XYT expansion modules. The series reached its architectural maturity with the introduction of the B1z and B1 sub-families, which added built-in Ethernet ports and expanded data register capacity to 10,000 words. As of 2024, the FBS Series is in the mature/sustaining phase of its product lifecycle. FATEK continues to supply spare parts and replacement modules, but active development has migrated to the newer FATEK H Series platform. For facilities with existing FBS installations, long-term maintenance sourcing from authorized distributors and specialist spare-parts suppliers is the recommended strategy.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of FATEK FBS Series modules, including units that have been discontinued from the standard FATEK distribution channel. For facilities operating FBS-based control systems beyond the standard 10-year support window, DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension services including: verified surplus stock of CPU and I/O modules, functional testing of refurbished units against original FATEK specifications, cross-reference matching for discontinued part numbers to current or alternative equivalents, and emergency same-week dispatch for critical plant maintenance scenarios. All sourced units are traceable to original manufacturer documentation and are supplied with test reports on request.
FATEK FBS modules use a proprietary backplane bus protocol for inter-module communication. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all FBS units prior to dispatch: each CPU module undergoes a full program load/verify cycle using FATEK WinProladder software to confirm memory integrity and I/O scan function. Expansion modules including the FBS-24XYR are tested under simulated load conditions — relay output contacts are cycled a minimum of 100 times under rated current to verify contact resistance within specification (<100mΩ). Communication adapters are validated for Modbus RTU/TCP frame integrity at all supported baud rates. Analog modules are calibrated against a traceable reference standard with channel-by-channel linearity verification across the full input/output range.
