Technical Dossier
The Fuji Electric NP1 Series (MICREX-F platform) is a compact, modular PLC system deployed across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical plants, nuclear auxiliary systems, steel mills, and offshore refinery control infrastructure. With a production lifecycle spanning from the early 1990s through the 2010s, the NP1 platform established a significant installed base in Asia-Pacific and European process industries. Its backplane-based architecture supports deterministic scan cycles and high-density I/O expansion, making it a preferred control backbone in facilities where replacement rather than full migration is the economically rational choice. DriveKNMS maintains an active inventory of NP1 Series modules to support long-term maintenance contracts and emergency replacement requirements.
The NP1 Series was introduced as part of Fuji Electric's MICREX-F control system family, designed to bridge the gap between relay-based control panels and fully distributed control systems (DCS). Early hardware revisions used parallel backplane communication with fixed-slot addressing. Mid-generation revisions introduced the NP1L communication adapter family, enabling RS-232C, RS-485, and eventually Ethernet connectivity without requiring CPU replacement. Late-generation NP1 CPUs such as the NP1PS-117R incorporated onboard program memory expansion and improved instruction throughput compared to the original NP1PS-117 baseline.
Compatibility constraints are a critical operational consideration: NP1 I/O modules are slot-position dependent on specific base unit configurations. Mixing early-revision base units with late-revision CPU modules requires firmware verification. The NP1L-ET1 and NP1L-ET2 Ethernet adapters are not backward-compatible with first-generation NP1 base units without hardware modification. As the series has entered end-of-life status with Fuji Electric, sourcing certified used and refurbished modules from specialist distributors is the primary maintenance pathway for existing installations.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced modules within the Fuji Electric NP1 Series. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional classification:
CPU Modules
NP1PS-117: Base CPU module, 8K step program memory, standard scan cycle control.
NP1PS-117R: Enhanced CPU module with extended program memory and improved instruction set over NP1PS-117.
NP1PH-08: High-speed CPU variant, optimized for fast I/O response applications in motion-adjacent control tasks.
Digital Input (DI) Modules
NP1X-16: 16-point DC digital input module, 24VDC sink/source compatible.
NP1X-32: 32-point DC digital input module, high-density configuration for panel space optimization.
NP1AX-08: 8-point AC digital input module, 100–240VAC rated for direct field device interfacing.
Digital Output (DO) Modules
NP1Y-16: 16-point transistor output module, NPN open-collector, 24VDC load.
NP1Y-08R: 8-point relay output module, Form-A contacts, rated for mixed AC/DC load switching.
NP1AY-04: 4-point AC triac output module, 100–240VAC, zero-cross switching.
Communication Adapter Modules
NP1L-RS1: RS-232C serial communication adapter, point-to-point protocol support.
NP1L-RS2: RS-485 multi-drop serial adapter, supports Modbus RTU and Fuji proprietary protocols.
NP1L-ET1: 10BASE-T Ethernet adapter, supports FINS/UDP and basic TCP socket communication.
NP1L-ET2: 100BASE-TX Ethernet adapter, enhanced throughput for SCADA integration and HMI connectivity.
Power Supply & Base Units
NP1PM-48E: 48-point expansion base unit with integrated power distribution bus.
NP1BP-05: 5-slot base unit, compact configuration for space-constrained panel installations.
NP1BP-08: 8-slot base unit, standard rack for mixed CPU and I/O module configurations.
Fuji Electric has formally discontinued active production of the NP1 Series. OEM replacement stock is no longer available through standard distribution channels. For facilities operating NP1-based control systems, the viable maintenance strategy involves sourcing certified refurbished or new-old-stock (NOS) modules from specialist industrial parts distributors.
Where a direct NP1 module replacement is unavailable, DriveKNMS technical staff can advise on compatible substitute modules or assist in evaluating migration pathways to current Fuji Electric MICREX-SX or third-party PLC platforms, with full documentation of I/O mapping and program conversion requirements.
NP1 Series modules present specific testing challenges due to their backplane-dependent communication architecture. Functional verification cannot be performed in isolation; each module must be tested within a compatible NP1 base unit with an active CPU and power supply present. DriveKNMS operates dedicated NP1 test benches configured with multiple base unit variants to accommodate the full range of slot-dependent I/O addressing modes.
Testing protocol for NP1 CPU modules (NP1PS-117, NP1PS-117R, NP1PH-08) includes: power-on self-test (POST) verification, program memory read/write cycle validation, I/O bus communication integrity check, and watchdog timer function confirmation. Communication adapter modules (NP1L-RS1, NP1L-RS2, NP1L-ET1, NP1L-ET2) are tested under live protocol traffic using Modbus RTU and FINS/UDP test sequences. Relay output modules (NP1Y-08R) undergo contact resistance measurement and rated-load switching endurance verification. All tested units are issued a DriveKNMS inspection certificate with test date and technician reference.
