The Series 90-70 platform was introduced by GE Fanuc Automation in the early 1990s as a successor to the Series Six and Series Five PLC families. Its VMEbus-based backplane architecture was a deliberate departure from proprietary bus designs, enabling higher data throughput between CPU and I/O modules. Early revisions used the IC697CPU731 and IC697CPU771 processors operating at 12 MHz with limited memory. Subsequent generations introduced the IC697CPU781 and IC697CPU782 with expanded program memory and floating-point coprocessor support.
