GE Fanuc Series 90-70 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of Series 90-70 Architecture

The Series 90-70 platform was introduced by GE Fanuc Automation in the early 1990s as a successor to the Series Six and Series Five PLC families. Its VMEbus-based backplane architecture was a deliberate departure from proprietary bus designs, enabling higher data throughput between CPU and I/O modules. Early revisions used the IC697CPU731 and IC697CPU771 processors operating at 12 MHz with limited memory. Subsequent generations introduced the IC697CPU781 and IC697CPU782 with expanded program memory and floating-point coprocessor support.

The communications architecture evolved in parallel: early deployments relied on the IC697CMM711 and IC697CMM741 for serial and Genius Bus connectivity. As Ethernet became the dominant industrial protocol, GE Fanuc introduced the IC697CMM742 Ethernet Interface Module, enabling TCP/IP-based SRTP communications with SCADA and HMI systems. The platform reached its architectural maturity with the introduction of the IC697CPU788 and IC697CPU789 high-performance processors, which remained in production until GE Fanuc transitioned the product line to Emerson Automation Solutions (now Emerson) following the 2011 divestiture. The Series 90-70 was formally declared end-of-life by GE Fanuc, with last-time-buy notifications issued to registered integrators. However, given the 20–30 year operational lifespan typical of heavy industrial control systems, demand for replacement and spare modules remains active.

Quality Control for the Series 90-70 Range

Series 90-70 modules present specific test challenges due to their VMEbus backplane architecture and the age-related failure modes common to equipment manufactured between 1992 and 2010. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all IC697 modules prior to shipment.

Power supply and chassis modules (including the IC697CHS783E) undergo full load testing at rated output wattage with backplane bus voltage verification across all VME power rails (+5V, ±12V). CPU modules are tested under live program execution with memory read/write cycle verification and watchdog timer validation. Discrete I/O modules are point-tested at rated voltage and current with isolation resistance measurement between channel groups. Analog modules are calibrated against NIST-traceable reference standards with linearity and offset error verification across the full input/output range. Communications modules are tested for protocol handshake integrity and bus arbitration behavior under simulated multi-drop load conditions. Electrolytic capacitors in power supply sections are inspected for ESR degradation and replaced where values fall outside manufacturer tolerance. All modules are cleaned, inspected for PCB corrosion or mechanical damage, and function-tested prior to packaging.
