The GE PACSystems RX3i platform is one of the most widely deployed programmable automation controller (PAC) architectures in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants, the RX3i backplane-based architecture provides deterministic control with high-availability redundancy options. The IC695PBM300 is a PROFIBUS DP Master module within this ecosystem, enabling the RX3i CPU to act as a Class 1 Master on a PROFIBUS DP network — supporting up to 125 slave devices at data rates up to 12 Mbps. Its deployment is common in legacy DCS migration projects and brownfield automation upgrades where PROFIBUS DP remains the fieldbus standard.
GE Intelligent Platforms (now Emerson Automation Solutions following the 2018 acquisition) introduced the PACSystems RX3i platform in the early 2000s as a successor to the Series 90-30 and Series 90-70 PLC families. The RX3i retained backward compatibility with 90-30 I/O modules via the IC694 adapter carrier, while introducing a high-speed PCI backplane (IC695 prefix) capable of 200 MB/s throughput — a significant architectural leap over the VME-based 90-70 bus.
Early RX3i CPUs (IC695CPU310, IC695CPU315) used CompactFlash for program storage. Later generations (IC695CPU320, IC695CPE302, IC695CPE305, IC695CPE310, IC695CPE330, IC695CPE400) introduced USB programming ports, expanded memory, and Ethernet-embedded controllers. The IC695CPE400 represents the current flagship, supporting IEC 61131-3 structured programming and EtherNet/IP native integration. Communication modules evolved in parallel: PROFIBUS (IC695PBM300), PROFINET (IC695PNC001), DeviceNet (IC695NDR001), and EtherNet/IP scanner (IC695ETM001) modules were introduced to address diverse fieldbus environments. The RX3i platform is now in its mature/late-lifecycle phase; GE/Emerson continues to support it but new installations increasingly favor the CPE400 with native Ethernet I/O.
