GE IS200 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of IS200 Architecture

The IS200 series was introduced alongside the Mark VI platform in the mid-1990s as a replacement for the earlier Mark V (IS200 predecessor boards used the IS215 and IS410 designations under Speedtronic). The Mark VI architecture standardized on a VME-based backplane with triple-redundant (TMR) and simplex configurations. IS200 modules communicate over a dedicated IONet Ethernet segment at 10 Mbps, separating process I/O traffic from supervisory HMI traffic.

With the introduction of Mark VIe circa 2005–2008, GE migrated to an Ethernet-native I/O architecture (EtherNet/IP backbone), introducing the IS200 series variants with revised firmware and updated EEPROM configurations. Many IS200 boards are cross-compatible between Mark VI and Mark VIe racks with firmware revision alignment. The IS200EDCFG1AED specifically functions as an excitation and DC feedback configuration board within the EX2100 static excitation system, interfacing with the generator field circuit.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete IS200 Parts

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory pool for IS200 series modules sourced from decommissioned Mark VI and EX2100 systems. All units undergo full functional verification prior to listing. For plant operators managing aging Mark VI installations beyond OEM active support windows, DriveKNMS provides:

IS200 modules confirmed end-of-active-production by GE Vernova include IS200VCRCH1B, IS200VCMIH2C, and IS200VPROH1B. DriveKNMS stocks tested surplus units for these designations.

Quality Control for the IS200 Range

IS200 series modules present specific test challenges due to their VME backplane bus architecture and proprietary IONet communication stack. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IS200 units:

  • Backplane continuity test: All VME bus pins (A and B rows) verified for continuity and isolation against adjacent signals using automated bed-of-nails fixture.
  • IONet communication validation: Module inserted into a live Mark VI test rack; IONet packet exchange confirmed at 10 Mbps with no CRC errors over a 30-minute soak period.
  • Analog channel calibration: For AI boards, all input channels verified against NIST-traceable reference signals; deviation logged against OEM specification tolerances.
  • EEPROM/firmware read-back: Configuration EEPROM contents read and compared against known-good reference images for the applicable hardware revision.
  • Thermal soak: Modules operated at 50°C ambient for 2 hours to screen latent component failures prior to shipment.
  • Visual and mechanical inspection: PCB examined for corrosion, cold solder joints, damaged connectors, and capacitor bulge under 10× magnification.
