GE IS200 Speedtronic Mark VI Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of IS200 Architecture

The Speedtronic lineage begins with Mark I (1968), progressing through Mark II, Mark IV, and Mark V before the Mark VI platform was introduced in the mid-1990s. The Mark VI represented a fundamental architectural shift: from proprietary card-cage designs to a VMEbus-based modular system with standardized IS200-prefix I/O boards. The IS200 hardware generation introduced a separation between the controller (VCMI, VTUR, VPRO) and the I/O termination layer, enabling field replacement of individual modules without disturbing wiring terminations on companion TBCI/TBQC terminal boards.

The Mark VIe generation (IS420-prefix modules) followed in the 2000s, introducing Ethernet-based IONet replacing the earlier ARCNET topology, and expanding the I/O density per rack. IS200 modules are not directly interchangeable with IS420 modules; backplane connectors, firmware, and toolchain (ToolboxST vs. earlier CIMPLICITY-based configuration) differ between generations. Plants running original Mark VI hardware must source IS200-series replacements specifically — IS420 substitution requires a formal control system upgrade project.

As of 2026, GE Vernova (the successor entity to GE Power) has formally classified the majority of IS200-series modules as mature/end-of-life, with new manufacture discontinued for most part numbers. Lifecycle extension support is now the primary procurement mode for IS200 hardware.

Quality Control for the IS200 Range

IS200-series modules present specific test challenges due to their VMEbus backplane interface, dual-ported SRAM architecture, and in some cases embedded EEPROM firmware that must be validated against the target Mark VI software revision. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IS200 units prior to dispatch:

Backplane connector inspection: VME P1/P2 connector pin integrity check under 10× magnification; bent or oxidized pins are cause for rejection. Functional power-on test: module is seated in a live IS200-compatible VME crate; power rail voltages (+5 V, ±12 V) are verified at the module edge connector. Communication bus validation: for VCMI and VTUR modules, IONet ARCNET participation is confirmed via network analyzer capture. Relay output verification: for TRLY modules, all 16 relay channels are actuated and contact resistance measured (<0.5 Ω). Analog channel calibration check: for TBAIH and AEAAH modules, a calibrated signal source is applied across the full 4–20 mA and thermocouple input ranges; output linearity is verified against GE specification GEH-6421. Firmware revision logging: embedded firmware version is read and recorded; customers are advised of any revision mismatch relative to their installed ToolboxST application version.
