GE IS200 Series Technical Notes

The GE IS200 series is a family of printed circuit board assemblies developed by General Electric as the core I/O, control, and communication infrastructure for the Mark VI and Mark VIe turbine control systems. These systems are deployed across heavy industrial sectors including combined-cycle power plants, nuclear auxiliary systems, oil refineries, petrochemical complexes, and LNG terminals. The IS200 platform replaced the earlier Mark V predecessor boards and established a modular, VME-based architecture that allowed plant operators to configure control cabinets with granular I/O density. Installed base estimates place Mark VI systems in thousands of gas and steam turbine units globally, making IS200 boards among the most strategically critical spare parts in the power generation aftermarket.

The Evolution of IS200 Architecture

The IS200 series emerged in the mid-1990s as GE transitioned from the relay-logic and analog-heavy Mark IV and Mark V platforms to a fully digital, networked turbine control architecture. Early IS200 boards operated on the IONet communication backbone — a proprietary GE deterministic network — and interfaced with the UCSC (Unit Control System Controller) and VCMI (VME Communication Module Interface) cards. The architecture used triple modular redundancy (TMR) on critical control paths, meaning many IS200 I/O boards were installed in sets of three per control function.

By the mid-2000s, GE introduced the Mark VIe platform, which migrated from VME backplane architecture to an Ethernet-based IONet and introduced IS200 "E" suffix variants (e.g., IS200EACFG, IS200EPCTG). These variants retained physical compatibility with many existing cabinet form factors but required updated firmware and ToolboxST configuration software. Plants running original Mark VI hardware face a compatibility boundary: IS200 (non-E) boards cannot be directly substituted with IS200E boards without control system reconfiguration. This lifecycle boundary is the primary driver of demand for original-specification IS200 spare parts in the maintenance and overhaul market.

IS200 Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked IS200 series modules. Each entry reflects the board's primary functional role within the Mark VI / Mark VIe control architecture.

Terminal Boards & I/O Interface

  • IS200TTURH1C: Turbine trip terminal board; interfaces trip solenoid outputs and emergency stop circuits to the Mark VI PPRO protection processor.
  • IS200TBCIH1C: Contact input terminal board; provides 24 VDC dry-contact discrete input termination for up to 24 field signals.
  • IS200TBCIH1D: Revised contact input terminal board; updated conformal coating specification over H1C revision.
  • IS200TBAIH1C: Analog input terminal board; supports thermocouple, RTD, and 4–20 mA process signal termination.
  • IS200TBQCH1C: Speed/frequency input terminal board; conditions magnetic pickup and proximity probe signals for turbine speed measurement.
  • IS200TSVOH1B: Servo output terminal board; drives electrohydraulic servo valves (EHSVs) for fuel and inlet guide vane control.
  • IS200TRLYH1C: Relay output terminal board; provides isolated relay contact outputs for alarm annunciation and auxiliary switching.
  • IS200TPROH1C: Protection relay output terminal board; dedicated to trip-class relay outputs with hardwired redundancy paths.

Processor & Controller Modules

  • IS200UCVEH2A: Mark VIe unit controller; primary CPU module executing turbine sequencing, protection, and HMI communication tasks.
  • IS200UCSCH1A: Unit control system controller (UCSC); legacy Mark VI main processor board managing all I/O scan and control loop execution.
  • IS200PSCAH1A: Power supply conditioner board; conditions and monitors 28 VDC and 125 VDC cabinet power rails.

Communication & Network Adapters

  • IS200VCMIH2C: VME communication module interface; bridges IONet Ethernet to the VME backplane for Mark VI I/O board data exchange.
  • IS200EACFG1A: Ethernet adapter configuration board; used in Mark VIe systems for IONet segment configuration and diagnostics.
  • IS200EPCTG1A: Ethernet process control terminal board; integrates process I/O with the Mark VIe Ethernet IONet backbone.

Power Supply Modules

  • IS200PSCDH1A: DC power supply distribution board; distributes conditioned 28 VDC to IS200 I/O terminal boards within the control cabinet.
  • IS200BPPBH1A: Backplane power board; provides regulated voltage rails to VME-format IS200 processor and communication cards.

Quality Control for the IS200 Range

IS200 boards present specific test challenges due to their mixed-signal design: digital backplane communication coexists with precision analog signal conditioning, high-side relay drivers, and in some cases direct servo amplifier stages. DriveKNMS applies a board-class-specific test protocol for IS200 units:
