Hirschmann's Spider and MS-series switches were deployed extensively throughout the 2000s and early 2010s in automotive assembly lines, water treatment facilities, power substations, and process manufacturing plants. The MS2108-2 media module provided the physical-layer flexibility that made those switches adaptable to mixed fiber and copper topologies — a capability that was engineered into the hardware and cannot be replicated by simply swapping in a newer switch model without reconfiguring the entire network segment.
Hirschmann has since transitioned its portfolio to the EAGLE, BOBCAT, and HiOS-based product lines. These platforms are not backward-compatible at the module level.
