The Evolution of Experion PKS Series C Architecture

Honeywell's Experion PKS platform was introduced in the early 2000s as a successor to the TDC 3000 and PlantScape systems, consolidating process control, safety, and asset management under a unified software environment. The Series C generation — centered on the C300 Controller — introduced a significant architectural shift: the adoption of a dedicated Control Execution Environment (CEE) running on a real-time OS, decoupled from the Windows-based Experion Server. This separation improved determinism and fault isolation.

Early Series C deployments used IOTA (I/O Termination Assembly) boards paired with Series C I/O Link modules. Subsequent revisions introduced enhanced FTE switch integration, expanded the supported I/O module count per controller, and added support for HART pass-through on analog modules. The platform has since entered a mature/extended lifecycle phase. Honeywell continues to provide long-term maintenance support (LTMS) for Series C hardware, but new greenfield deployments increasingly migrate toward the Experion PKS Highly Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) architecture.
