Technical Dossier
The FSC platform was introduced by Honeywell in the early 1990s as a dedicated hardware-based safety controller, predating the widespread adoption of IEC 61511 process safety standards. The original architecture used a 1oo1 (one-out-of-one) voting structure with optional redundancy via paired processor modules. Through successive hardware revisions, the platform evolved to support 1oo2 and 2oo3 voting topologies, enabling higher SIL ratings without external hardware duplication.
The backplane bus architecture uses a proprietary parallel communication protocol. Early-generation modules (FC-PRO-0100 series processors) communicated via a 16-bit parallel bus; later revisions introduced enhanced diagnostics and faster scan cycles. Compatibility between module generations is constrained by firmware revision and backplane slot addressing — cross-generation substitution requires engineering validation. As of 2026, the FSC hardware line is in the mature/end-of-life phase. Honeywell has transitioned new SIS projects to the Safety Manager SC (SMSC) platform. However, the installed FSC base remains extensive, and Honeywell and authorized third-party suppliers continue to provide long-term maintenance support (LTMS) for FSC hardware through at least 2030 under extended lifecycle agreements.

DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support for FSC installations including: identification of direct replacement modules, cross-reference to compatible substitute part numbers, firmware version matching for processor and I/O modules, and emergency urgent RFQ handling for critical shutdown system maintenance. Customers operating FSC-based SIS in refineries, LNG terminals, or power generation facilities can submit a full bill-of-materials (BOM) for consolidated sourcing review.
FSC modules present specific test challenges due to their safety-rated backplane bus architecture and internal self-diagnostic routines. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol for all FSC inventory:
