Technical Dossier
The Honeywell Safety Manager platform evolved from the earlier FSC (Fail Safe Controller) system introduced in the 1990s, which itself succeeded the TÜV-certified relay-based safety logic solvers of the prior generation. The FSC used a TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy) or 1oo2D voting architecture and established the foundational backplane communication protocol that the FS Series inherited and extended.
The FS Series introduced a modernized I/O bus, improved diagnostics coverage (DC >99%), and expanded the module catalog to support HART pass-through, fieldbus integration, and high-density I/O configurations. Firmware compatibility between FSC and FS Series modules is not direct; migration projects require a formal Honeywell-approved conversion procedure. Plants running FSC hardware that have not yet migrated face increasing obsolescence risk as FSC module production has been discontinued, while FS Series modules remain in active production and support cycles as of 2026.
The FS Series communicates with the Honeywell Experion PKS DCS via the Safety Builder engineering environment and supports peer-to-peer safety communication via the FSC Link and SM Link protocols. Compatibility with third-party DCS platforms requires certified gateway modules.
