The Evolution of STG700 Architecture

The STG700 series succeeded Honeywell's earlier ST 3000 Smart Transmitter platform, introduced in the 1980s and in service through the 2000s. The STG700 generation introduced a modular electronics architecture separating the sensor module from the electronics housing, enabling field replacement of individual assemblies without full instrument removal. Early STG700 variants shipped with 4-20 mA HART 5 communication. Subsequent revisions added HART 7 compliance, enabling advanced diagnostics, multivariable output, and integration with Honeywell Experion PKS DCS via FDT/DTM device drivers. The STG740 sub-family specifically addresses gauge pressure measurement with configurable wetted material options (316L SST, Hastelloy C-276, Tantalum) to accommodate corrosive and high-purity process media. As the ST 3000 platform reached end-of-life, the STG700 was positioned as the direct migration path, with dimensional and process connection compatibility maintained to reduce retrofit engineering costs. The STG700 series is currently in its mature lifecycle phase; Honeywell continues to supply new units and spare electronics, but the platform is progressively being supplemented by the STG800 SmartLine series in new greenfield projects.
