Technical Dossier
The FSC platform was introduced by Fail-Safe Controls Ltd. before its acquisition by Honeywell Process Solutions. Early FSC hardware used proprietary backplane communication with discrete relay-based I/O. The XDL module generation standardized the physical form factor and introduced a unified bus interface compatible with the FSC Central Processing Unit (CPU) families, including the XDC and XFL controller modules. The XDL series addressed the transition from relay logic to solid-state digital I/O, enabling higher channel density per rack slot. Subsequent revisions introduced HART pass-through capability on analog modules and improved diagnostic coverage (DC) metrics to meet SIL 3 requirements under IEC 61508. Compatibility constraints are significant: XDL modules are rack-specific and require matching backplane revisions. Mixing early-generation and late-generation XDL modules within the same rack without firmware alignment is a known source of diagnostic faults. As the FSC platform has entered its mature/end-of-life phase, Honeywell has transitioned new SIS projects to the Safety Manager SC (SMSC) platform; however, the installed XDL base remains active and requires ongoing spare parts support through at least the 2030s at most facilities.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked modules within the Honeywell FSC XDL series, organized by functional category:
Digital Input (DI) Modules
Digital Output (DO) Modules
Analog Input (AI) Modules
Analog Output (AO) Modules
Communication & CPU Modules
