Technical Dossier
The RCU series originated as a modular remote operator station concept within Kongsberg's maritime automation division. Early-generation units (RCU100–RCU300 range) used proprietary serial bus communication protocols and were designed for standalone panel integration aboard vessels and in onshore control rooms. These units relied on RS-422 and RS-485 physical layers with Kongsberg-specific framing, limiting interoperability with third-party SCADA systems.
Mid-generation RCU modules (RCU400–RCU500 range) introduced dual-redundant communication paths and began supporting Modbus RTU as a secondary protocol, enabling integration with third-party DCS platforms. Hardware architecture shifted to surface-mount PCB construction, improving vibration tolerance for marine applications.
The RCU600 generation — which includes the RCU602 — represents the mature phase of the series. These units feature enhanced EMC shielding, wider operating temperature ranges (-20°C to +70°C), and support for both legacy serial and Ethernet-based supervisory links. The RCU602 specifically is a dual-channel remote control unit used for joystick and lever input processing in dynamic positioning (DP) and thruster control systems. As of 2026, the RCU600 series is in the mature/end-of-active-production phase; Kongsberg has transitioned new projects to the K-Thrust and K-Pos next-generation platforms. However, the installed base of RCU600-series hardware remains extensive, and long-term maintenance support is a primary operational requirement for fleet operators and plant managers.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced models within the KONGSBERG RCU product family. Units are categorized by primary function:
Remote Control & Operator Interface Units
I/O and Signal Conditioning Modules
Communication and Bus Adapter Modules
Power Supply Modules
KONGSBERG RCU series modules incorporate proprietary backplane bus architectures and multi-layer PCB designs that require specialized test procedures beyond standard bench power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all RCU series units processed through its facility:
