The AM4140 platform was introduced by Kontron as a CompactPCI 3U form-factor processor board. Early revisions utilized Intel Pentium III processors at 733 MHz to 1.0 GHz, paired with PC133 SDRAM up to 512 MB. These initial variants — including the base AM4140 and AM4140-SA — established the board as a front-end controller in SCADA and DCS architectures.

Quality Control for the AM4140 Range

The AM4140 series incorporates a multi-layer CompactPCI backplane interface and proprietary Kontron BIOS firmware, requiring specialized test procedures beyond standard bench power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following QC protocol to all AM4140 units:

  • Backplane Bus Integrity Test: Each board is seated in a reference 4-slot cPCI chassis and subjected to 32-bit/33 MHz PCI bus loopback testing across all J1/J2 connector pins.
  • Processor & Memory Validation: CPU clock speed is confirmed via POST readout. SDRAM is tested with memtest86+ for a minimum of two full passes to detect single-bit and multi-bit error patterns.

  • Final Cosmetic & Mechanical Inspection: PCB surface, front-panel connectors, ejector handles, and board-edge fingers are inspected under magnification. Units with damaged connectors or delaminated PCB areas are quarantined.
