Technical Dossier
The Siemens 1FK7 synchronous servo motor series is the standard drive component across KUKA industrial robot platforms, including the KR QUANTEC, KR AGILUS, KR CYBERTECH, and KR IONTEC families. These motors are integrated into KUKA robot arm axes (A1–A6) and are driven by Siemens SINAMICS S120 drive modules via the DRIVE-CLiQ interface. Installed base spans chemical processing plants, nuclear facility maintenance robots, petroleum refinery automation lines, automotive body-in-white welding cells, and heavy-press stamping operations globally. The 1FK7 series is characterized by its compact flange design, high torque density, and native DRIVE-CLiQ encoder communication, which eliminates the need for a separate encoder cable and simplifies commissioning. Due to the deep integration between KUKA robot controllers (KRC4, KRC5) and the 1FK7 motor's electronic nameplate (stored on the encoder chip), replacement units must carry matching order numbers or be re-parameterized via WorkVisual.
The 1FK7 series was introduced by Siemens as a successor to the 1FK6 and 1FT6 motor families, targeting compact servo applications requiring high dynamic response. Early 1FK7 variants used resolver-based feedback systems and were compatible with SIMODRIVE 611 drive platforms, which were the standard in KUKA KRC1 and KRC2 robot controllers. With the transition to the KRC4 controller platform (circa 2010), KUKA standardized on 1FK7 motors equipped with DRIVE-CLiQ single-cable technology (SCT), combining power and encoder signals in one cable. This eliminated the separate encoder connector and reduced wiring complexity at the robot arm. The current generation supports absolute multiturn encoders (2048 lines, 4096 revolutions) and is fully compatible with SINAMICS S120 Combi and booksize drive formats used in KRC4 and KRC5 cabinets. Older resolver-based 1FK7 units are no longer in production but remain in service across legacy KRC2 installations; DriveKNMS maintains stock of both generations to support mixed-fleet maintenance environments. The 1FK7 Compact (1FK7C) sub-series introduced a shorter shaft length for space-constrained axis configurations, particularly A4 and A5 on smaller robot models.

The resolver-based 1FK7 sub-series (order suffix -1RG0, -1RF0) reached end-of-production status with Siemens. Siemens no longer manufactures replacement units for SIMODRIVE 611-compatible variants, and lead times through authorized distribution channels can exceed 26 weeks for refurbished stock. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested, pull-out 1FK7 resolver motors sourced from decommissioned KRC2 robot cells in European and Asian automotive plants. For DRIVE-CLiQ variants that are still in limited production, DriveKNMS provides expedited sourcing with typical lead times of 3–10 business days for in-stock units. All units are supplied with the original Siemens encoder chip intact; the electronic nameplate data (motor type, rated speed, rated torque, encoder resolution) is verified prior to shipment to ensure compatibility with the target KRC4/KRC5 controller without requiring WorkVisual re-parameterization. Cross-reference service is available: submit your KUKA order number (00-XXXXXX) or Siemens article number and DriveKNMS will confirm the exact replacement or functional equivalent.
Each 1FK7 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection protocol specific to the motor's feedback type and frame size. Resolver-based units are tested on a dedicated SIMODRIVE 611 test bench: resolver signal amplitude, phase offset, and null position are verified against Siemens specification sheets. DRIVE-CLiQ units are connected to a SINAMICS S120 test cabinet running a standard KRC4 axis parameterization; the controller reads the electronic nameplate, performs an automatic encoder calibration, and executes a no-load run at rated speed (typically 2000–6000 RPM depending on frame size) to confirm speed stability and current draw within ±5% of nameplate values. Mechanical inspection covers bearing play (axial and radial), shaft runout (tolerance: ≤0.02 mm TIR), brake function (where fitted), and connector pin integrity on both the power connector (Harting or Siemens M23) and the encoder connector. Motors with evidence of winding insulation degradation (IR test <100 MΩ at 500 VDC) are rejected. Units passing all checks are issued a DriveKNMS test certificate with date, technician ID, and measured values.
