Technical Dossier
The Lauer PCS Series represents one of the most widely deployed operator panel platforms in European heavy industry. Manufactured by Lauer Systemtechnik GmbH (Germany), PCS-series terminals have accumulated significant installed base across petrochemical refineries, chemical processing plants, nuclear auxiliary systems, and continuous-process manufacturing lines. Their ruggedized membrane keypad construction, passive-cooling enclosures, and deterministic serial communication protocols made them the preferred HMI choice for machine builders and OEM integrators throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Many facilities operating Siemens S5, S7-300, and Allen-Bradley SLC 500 controllers continue to rely on PCS panels as the primary operator interface, making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational requirement.
The PCS product line was introduced by Lauer in the late 1980s as a compact, cost-effective alternative to full-graphic HMI terminals. Early models such as the PCS050 and PCS060 used RS-232 point-to-point communication and supported a limited character-based display. The mid-generation transition — represented by the PCS090, PCS095, and PCS096 — introduced multi-protocol support (PPI, MPI, Profibus-DP, and proprietary Lauer LCA bus), expanded function key arrays, and improved backlit LCD modules. Late-generation models including the PCS950 and PCS960 added graphical display capability and Ethernet-ready communication options, bridging the gap toward modern IP-based HMI platforms.
Compatibility across generations is limited: PCS050/060-era panels use a 9-pin D-sub serial interface incompatible with the 15-pin MPI/Profibus connectors found on PCS090+ units. Firmware is panel-specific and non-transferable between hardware revisions. Replacement of a failed unit therefore requires an exact model match or a validated substitute with equivalent protocol support and display resolution.
The following SKUs represent verified models within the Lauer PCS operator panel series, organized by functional category:
Compact Text Panels (Entry-Level)
Mid-Range Operator Panels (Standard Series)
Advanced Graphic Panels
PCS Series panels present specific failure modes that require targeted test procedures. The backlight inverter board (common failure on PCS090–PCS097) is bench-tested under full operating voltage for a minimum 4-hour burn-in cycle. Membrane keypad continuity is verified across all function keys using automated matrix scanning. The MPI/Profibus communication port is tested against a live S7-300 CPU using Siemens STEP 7 diagnostic tools to confirm protocol handshake, data exchange, and error-free telegram transmission. Display contrast and pixel uniformity are evaluated under standardized lighting conditions. Units with repaired or replaced components are re-tested to the same standard as new-old-stock units before dispatch. Each unit is assigned a unique test record traceable to its serial number.
