Bosch Rexroth CSB01 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The Bosch Rexroth CSB01 series (Control Section for Servo Drives) is a family of digital servo drive control modules engineered for high-precision motion control in heavy industrial environments. Deployed across chemical processing plants, nuclear power facilities, oil refineries, steel mills, and automotive manufacturing lines, the CSB01 platform forms the intelligence layer of the Rexroth IndraDrive and Diax04 drive systems. These modules govern axis interpolation, encoder feedback processing, fieldbus communication, and safety function execution. Their modular architecture allows system integrators to configure drive intelligence independently of the power section, enabling targeted replacement and lifecycle extension without full drive replacement.

The Evolution of CSB01 Architecture

The CSB01 series emerged as the successor to earlier Rexroth DSC (Digital Servo Control) cards used in the Diax02 and Diax03 platforms. The transition to CSB01 introduced a unified firmware architecture compatible with both IndraDrive C (HCS) and IndraDrive M (HMS/HMD) power sections, eliminating the need for separate control hardware across drive families.

Generation 1 (CSB01.1N): Introduced SERCOS I/II interface support and basic analog encoder feedback. Targeted at standalone axis control with limited multi-axis coordination.

Generation 2 (CSB01.1C): Added support for PROFIBUS-DP, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and EtherCAT communication options via plug-in interface modules. Expanded encoder support to include EnDat 2.1/2.2, Hiperface, and resolver interfaces. This generation introduced the modular option slot architecture (slots for communication, encoder, and safety modules), which remains the defining characteristic of the CSB01.1C sub-family.

Firmware Evolution: CSB01 modules are firmware-dependent. Firmware versions (FW) are encoded in the part number suffix. Cross-generation firmware upgrades require hardware compatibility verification. Modules running legacy FW versions may not support newer safety function profiles (STO, SS1, SLS) required by IEC 62061 and ISO 13849 compliance frameworks.

Compatibility Note: CSB01.1C modules are not backward-compatible with Diax04 HDD power sections without an adapter interface. Integration with IndraDrive Cs (compact series) requires CSB01.1C-specific firmware branches.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete CSB01 Parts

The CSB01 series has entered the mature-to-declining phase of its product lifecycle. Bosch Rexroth has progressively migrated new machine designs toward the IndraDrive Mi and ctrlX DRIVE platforms. As a result, CSB01 modules — particularly early-generation CSB01.1C variants with legacy firmware — are no longer available through standard distribution channels and carry extended lead times from OEM sources.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of CSB01 control sections sourced from decommissioned production lines, certified refurbishment programs, and verified surplus channels. Our stock covers both active and discontinued firmware variants, including hard-to-source FW suffix configurations that are no longer produced. For facilities operating CSB01-based IndraDrive systems with 10–20 year maintenance horizons — common in nuclear, petrochemical, and continuous-process industries — DriveKNMS provides a structured lifecycle extension service: part identification by full part number, cross-reference to compatible replacement firmware, and documented test records for each unit shipped.

We also support cross-series substitution analysis: identifying whether a CSB01.1C module can be replaced by a CSB01.1N or a newer IndraDrive control section without requiring drive parameter re-commissioning.

Quality Control for the CSB01 Range

CSB01 modules present specific test challenges due to their multi-layer architecture: the base control board, the communication option module (SERCOS, PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, etc.), the encoder interface card, and the safety option board each require independent functional verification before system-level testing.

DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all CSB01 units:

1. Visual and Physical Inspection: Backplane connector pin integrity check (64-pin and 96-pin variants), capacitor inspection, conformal coating assessment, and firmware label verification against the part number suffix.

2. Firmware Version Verification: Each unit is powered and the firmware version is read via the IndraDrive commissioning software (IndraWorks DS). The FW version is cross-referenced against the part number to confirm authenticity.

3. Communication Interface Test: The fieldbus option module (SERCOS III, PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP) is tested for correct initialization, node address assignment, and cyclic data exchange using a hardware-in-the-loop test rig.

4. Encoder Interface Validation: EnDat 2.2 and resolver interfaces are tested with reference encoders to verify signal integrity, position resolution, and error flag behavior.

5. Safety Function Test (where applicable): For S1-suffix safety variants, STO activation and deactivation sequences are verified against IEC 61800-5-2 functional test procedures.

6. Burn-In and Thermal Cycling: Units are operated under load for a minimum of 4 hours across a temperature range of 0°C to 55°C to screen for latent component failures.

Each unit ships with a test report documenting all pass/fail results, firmware version, and inspector ID.
