Technical Dossier
The Rofin S231 series represents a generation of laser controller and power supply modules deployed extensively across global heavy industry sectors, including petrochemical refineries, nuclear facility maintenance operations, and continuous-process chemical plants. These units serve as the core control interface for Rofin solid-state and CO₂ laser systems, managing beam parameters, power regulation, and interlock logic. The S231 platform achieved widespread adoption in OEM laser cutting and welding cells throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and a substantial installed base remains in service today — particularly in facilities operating legacy laser systems under long-term maintenance contracts. The S231-02 controller variant is among the most frequently requested spare components for this installed base.
The S231 architecture was introduced by Rofin-Sinar as a modular control platform designed to interface with the company's DC-series and Slab laser resonators. Early revisions (S231-01 through S231-03) provided analog power control and basic interlock monitoring via discrete I/O. Mid-generation revisions introduced RS-232 and RS-485 serial communication interfaces, enabling integration with external CNC controllers and PLC systems from Siemens, Fanuc, and Mitsubishi. Later variants incorporated expanded diagnostic registers and improved thermal management circuitry to address field reliability issues identified in high-duty-cycle welding applications.
Compatibility across S231 sub-variants is not universal. Firmware versions are hardware-locked to specific PCB revisions, and substitution of one sub-variant for another requires verification of the resonator interface pinout and power bus rating. Facilities migrating from S231-series controllers to Rofin's subsequent SLOMO or PowerLine control platforms must account for protocol translation and I/O remapping. The S231 series is now classified as end-of-life (EOL) by Rofin (now Coherent Corp.), with no new production. All procurement is sourced from tested surplus and refurbished inventory.

The Rofin S231 series reached official end-of-life status following Coherent Corp.'s consolidation of the Rofin product portfolio. Factory new stock is no longer available through authorized distribution channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested surplus S231 modules sourced from decommissioned laser systems, OEM overstock, and controlled dismantling of retired production cells.
S231 modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane communication bus and resonator-coupled power circuits. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all S231 units prior to shipment:
Visual and mechanical inspection: PCB examination for corrosion, cold solder joints, damaged edge connectors, and capacitor failure indicators. Power-on functional test: Module energized on a dedicated S231 backplane test fixture; supply rail voltages verified against specification. Communication interface test: RS-232/RS-485 loopback test executed; Profibus gateway modules tested against a DP master simulator. I/O channel verification: All digital and analog I/O channels exercised; optocoupler isolation resistance measured. Thermal burn-in: Units operated at rated load for a minimum of 4 hours in a temperature-controlled environment to screen for early-life failures. Final documentation: Test report generated per unit, recording serial number, test date, measured parameters, and pass/fail status. All units are shipped with ESD-protective packaging and individual test documentation.
