Schneider Electric Modicon Quantum Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of Modicon Quantum Architecture

The Modicon Quantum platform was introduced by Schneider Electric (then AEG Modicon, later acquired by Schneider) in the early 1990s as a successor to the Modicon 984 series. The architecture was built around the VMEbus-derived S908 backplane, supporting up to 16 slots per local rack and extended I/O drops via RIO (Remote I/O) coaxial cable or Ethernet-based distributed I/O. Early CPU generations — including the 140CPU11302 and 140CPU11303 — offered limited memory (256KB–512KB) and single-port Modbus communication. Mid-generation processors such as the 140CPU43412A and 140CPU4321A introduced expanded RAM (up to 1MB user logic), dual Modbus ports, and integrated Modbus Plus (MB+) networking, enabling peer-to-peer communication across plant-wide control networks without a dedicated communication coprocessor. Later high-end variants — the 140CPU65150, 140CPU65160, and 140CPU67160 — added Ethernet TCP/IP ports, Unity Pro programming environment compatibility, and support for Transparent Ready web services. The platform's final evolution introduced the Hot Standby CPU pairs (140CPU67160 / 140CPU67261) for fully redundant control architectures. Schneider Electric officially announced end-of-sale for the majority of Quantum hardware in 2019–2021, with end-of-support timelines extending to 2030 for select models. Migration paths lead to the Modicon M580 (ePAC) platform, which uses standard Ethernet backplane (BMENOC) architecture. However, the capital cost and engineering effort of full platform migration means the Quantum installed base will remain operational — and require spare parts support — well into the 2030s.
