Technical Dossier
The M340 platform was formally launched circa 2006, built around the BMX backplane bus architecture — a proprietary high-speed parallel bus that differentiates it from the earlier Modicon Premium (TSX) series which used the ISA-derived X-Bus. The M340 rack accepts 4, 6, 8, or 12-slot configurations (BMXXBP0400, BMXXBP0600, BMXXBP0800, BMXXBP1200) and communicates internally at speeds sufficient for deterministic real-time control loops down to 1 ms cycle times.
Early M340 CPUs (BMX P34 1000/2000 series) supported Modbus TCP and CANopen natively. Subsequent firmware revisions added IEC 61131-3 structured text enhancements, redundancy options via the BMXCRA31200/31210 RIO drop adapters, and expanded Ethernet/IP compatibility. The platform reached technical maturity around 2012–2015. As of 2020, Schneider Electric has positioned the Modicon M580 as the strategic successor for new installations, placing the M340 in a sustained-support lifecycle phase. This means OEM replacement parts, particularly communication adapters and specialty I/O modules, are increasingly sourced through specialist distributors rather than standard channels.
Compatibility note: M340 modules are not cross-compatible with Modicon Quantum (140-prefix) or Modicon M580 (BMENOC/BMEP58x) racks. All BMX-prefix modules are exclusive to the M340 backplane.

DriveKNMS provides documented traceability for all M340 modules, including firmware version records where applicable, to support plant change-management and safety audit requirements.
The M340 platform's BMX backplane bus and RIO communication architecture require specialized validation procedures beyond standard power-on testing. DriveKNMS applies the following protocols to all M340 modules prior to dispatch:
