Technical Dossier
The Schneider Electric Modicon Quantum platform is one of the most widely deployed distributed control system (DCS) and programmable logic controller (PLC) architectures in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil and gas platforms, and large-scale refinery operations, the Quantum rack-based architecture has maintained a dominant installed base since its commercial introduction in the mid-1990s. The 140CPU67160S is a high-performance Unity processor module within this platform, supporting up to 1024 local I/O points, Modbus Plus and Ethernet connectivity, and full Unity Pro programming environment compatibility. Its deployment in safety-critical and continuous-process environments has made it a long-term fixture in plant asset management inventories worldwide.
The Modicon Quantum platform was introduced by Schneider Electric (then Groupe Schneider / AEG Schneider Automation) in 1995 as a successor to the Modicon 984 series. The architecture was designed around a high-speed backplane bus (S908 remote I/O) and a modular rack system supporting up to 16 slots per local rack and up to 31 remote drops via the RIO head-end adapter.
Early CPU generations — the 140CPU11302 and 140CPU11303 — operated on the Concept programming environment and were limited to Modbus Plus communications. The mid-generation transition introduced the 140CPU43412A and 140CPU53414A, which added Ethernet TCP/IP capability and expanded memory. The Unity-generation CPUs — including the 140CPU65150, 140CPU65160, 140CPU67160, and 140CPU67160S — represent the platform's final and most capable architecture tier, supporting IEC 61131-3 programming, hot standby redundancy (with the Hot Standby module 140CHS21000), and integrated web server diagnostics.
