The Foxboro FCP280 (Field Control Processor 280) is a core controller module within the Schneider Electric (formerly Foxboro/Invensys) I/A Series Distributed Control System (DCS). It is deployed extensively across global heavy industry verticals including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil & gas platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale chemical processing plants. The FCP280 platform represents the mature generation of Foxboro field-based control architecture, designed for high-availability process automation where continuous uptime is a non-negotiable operational requirement. Its modular backplane design, deterministic scan cycle, and compatibility with the I/A Series FBM (Field Bus Module) ecosystem have made it a long-term fixture in brownfield DCS installations worldwide. Installed base estimates place the FCP280 and its predecessor/successor variants in tens of thousands of control loops across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
The Foxboro I/A Series control processor lineage began with the CP10, CP30, and CP40 processors introduced in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These early units established the distributed, peer-to-peer Nodebus/Fieldbus communication paradigm that defined the I/A Series architecture. The FCP10 and FCP20 followed as field-mounted processors, enabling control logic to be distributed closer to the process. The FCP280 emerged as a significant generational step, incorporating a faster processor core, expanded memory, and enhanced redundancy management compared to its predecessors.
The FCP280 operates on the Foxboro Mesh Control Network (MCN) or legacy Nodebus, depending on system configuration. It supports peer-to-peer communication with other FCPs and with the AW (Application Workstation) layer. Redundant FCP280 pairs (primary + secondary) are standard in critical loop applications, with bumpless transfer on fault detection. The module interfaces with FBMs via the Fieldbus, supporting both legacy 100 Mbps Ethernet-based Fieldbus and older coaxial Fieldbus variants depending on the generation of FBM deployed.
With Schneider Electric's acquisition of Invensys in 2014, the FCP280 was formally integrated into the EcoStruxure Plant portfolio. While Schneider Electric has introduced the FCP270 and the newer FCP280-series variants as forward migration paths, the FCP280 itself remains in active service across a large installed base. Schneider Electric has communicated end-of-active-development status for certain FCP280 sub-variants, making third-party spare parts sourcing and lifecycle extension support increasingly critical for end users.
