The SIMATIC TP170 series was introduced in the late 1990s as a successor to the OP/TP 170A monochrome panel range. It introduced resistive color touchscreen technology, MPI/PROFIBUS-DP and RS-422/485 serial interfaces, and compatibility with STEP 7 and ProTool configuration environments. The architecture evolved through two primary sub-families:

TP170A — Monochrome STN LCD, 4-line text display, MPI interface only. Targeted at cost-sensitive discrete automation.
