It introduced resistive color touchscreen technology, MPI/PROFIBUS-DP and RS-422/485 serial interfaces, and compatibility with STEP 7 and ProTool configuration environments. The architecture evolved through two primary sub-families:
TP170A — Monochrome STN LCD, 4-line text display, MPI interface only. Targeted at cost-sensitive discrete automation. TP170B — STN color or monochrome LCD (5.7"), expanded tag count, support for WinCC flexible 2004 and later, MPI/PROFIBUS-DP dual interface. The TP170B became the dominant variant in process industries due to its graphical capability and protocol flexibility.
