Technical Dossier
The Siemens SINAMICS S120 is a modular multi-axis drive system deployed across the full spectrum of heavy industrial applications, including petrochemical plants, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore drilling platforms, steel rolling mills, and large-scale paper and pulp facilities. Its architecture separates the infeed (power supply) function from the motor module function, enabling centralized DC bus sharing across multiple axes — a design that reduces cabinet footprint and energy consumption in multi-drive installations. The S120 platform supports both vector control and servo control modes within the same hardware family, making it the reference standard for coordinated motion and high-dynamic drive applications in process industries worldwide.
The 6SL3210-1PE31-5AL0 is a Single Motor Module in booksize format, rated for a 75 kW output at 380–480 V AC input, with a continuous output current of 145 A. It operates within the S120 booksize component family and requires a compatible Line Module (Active Line Module or Smart Line Module) for DC bus supply.
The SINAMICS S120 platform was introduced by Siemens in the early 2000s as the successor to the SIMODRIVE 611 and MASTERDRIVES MC/VC families. The initial release established the booksize form factor and the shared DC bus topology. Subsequent hardware generations introduced the CU320 Control Unit (first generation), followed by the CU320-2 (second generation) with integrated PROFINET and PROFIBUS interfaces, eliminating the need for separate communication boards in most topologies.
The firmware evolution from SINAMICS Startdrive V4.x through V5.x and into the current V6.x generation introduced Safety Integrated functions (STO, SS1, SLS, SDI, SSM) directly into the drive firmware, replacing earlier external safety relay solutions. The introduction of the DRIVE-CLiQ communication protocol as the internal backbone between Control Units, Motor Modules, and Sensor Modules standardized wiring and enabled automatic component recognition. Older booksize modules (pre-2010 production) use earlier DRIVE-CLiQ firmware versions and may require firmware alignment when integrated with current CU320-2 DP/PN control units. Chassis format modules (6SL3310/6SL3315 series) address higher power ranges above 250 kW and share the same control platform.

The SINAMICS S120 booksize platform entered its mature lifecycle phase. First-generation Control Units (CU320, non-suffix) and early Motor Modules with production dates prior to 2012 are no longer manufactured by Siemens and are classified as discontinued (End of Life). Replacement with current-generation equivalents requires firmware and parameter migration, which is not always feasible in validated process environments such as pharmaceutical manufacturing or nuclear auxiliary systems where revalidation costs are prohibitive.
