Technical Dossier
The Siemens SINAMICS S120 is a modular multi-axis drive system deployed across the full spectrum of heavy industrial applications, including petrochemical plants, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, steel rolling mills, and large-scale paper and pulp facilities. Its booksize and chassis format power modules share a common DC bus architecture, enabling coordinated multi-axis motion with centralized energy management. The S120 platform holds a dominant installed base in process industries where axis synchronization, regenerative braking, and high dynamic response are non-negotiable operational requirements. The 6SL3224-0BE32-2AA0 is a booksize format Motor Module rated at 22 kW, 3-phase 380–480 V AC input, designed for permanent integration into S120 drive line-up configurations.
The SINAMICS S120 platform was introduced in the early 2000s as the successor to the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES MC (Motion Control) family. The first-generation S120 established the booksize form factor and the DRIVE-CLiQ communication backbone — a proprietary serial interface that replaced conventional encoder wiring and enabled automatic component identification. Early firmware versions (< 4.x) supported only vector control; subsequent releases introduced servo control, U/f control, and eventually Active Line Module (ALM) regenerative capability.
From firmware 4.5 onward, Safety Integrated functions (STO, SS1, SLS, SDI) were embedded directly into the drive firmware, eliminating the need for external safety relays in many SIL 2 / PLd applications. The introduction of the CU320-2 Control Unit (replacing the CU320) brought dual-core processing and expanded axis count per controller. The S120 Combi variant consolidated the Control Unit and Motor Module into a single housing for single-axis applications. Current production units are compatible with TIA Portal V14 and above via the Startdrive commissioning tool. Legacy units from the 2004–2010 production window require STARTER software for parameterization and are not natively compatible with TIA Portal without firmware migration.

Supplementary Modules
All S120 Motor Modules and Line Modules processed by DriveKNMS undergo a structured verification protocol prior to dispatch. DC bus capacitor ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) is measured and compared against OEM reference values; units with capacitor degradation exceeding 20% of nominal ESR are rejected. DRIVE-CLiQ port communication integrity is verified using a dedicated S120 test rig running STARTER software, confirming correct component identification handshake and firmware version readback. IGBT gate drive circuits are tested under controlled load conditions at 50% and 100% rated current. Thermal interface material on heatsink assemblies is inspected and replaced where delamination or dry-out is detected. Each unit is powered through a controlled ramp-up sequence to verify inrush current limiting and pre-charge circuit function before final packaging.
