Technical Dossier
The Trio Motion Technology MC2 Series is a family of multi-axis motion controllers engineered for high-precision industrial automation. Deployed across continuous-process industries including petrochemical plants, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, and precision manufacturing lines, the MC2 platform has established a significant installed base in applications where deterministic motion control and long-term hardware availability are non-negotiable requirements. The MC2/216 — a 16-axis capable controller with integrated I/O and Ethernet connectivity — represents the core of this series and remains one of the most widely specified Trio controllers in legacy OEM machine architectures across Europe and Asia-Pacific.
The MC2 platform was introduced by Trio Motion Technology as a successor to the MC206 and MC224 controller families, consolidating multi-axis coordination, onboard I/O, and fieldbus communication into a single DIN-rail-mountable form factor. Early MC2 variants relied on RS-232 and RS-485 serial interfaces for host communication. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced 10/100 Ethernet ports, enabling integration with SCADA systems and EtherCAT master functionality on select models.
The MC2 architecture uses Trio's proprietary TrioBASIC motion programming language and supports IEC 61131-3 structured text via the Motion Perfect development environment. Axis expansion is achieved through the UNIPLAY and SERCOS interface daughter cards, allowing the base controller to scale from 4 to 32 coordinated axes depending on the variant. Compatibility between MC2 sub-variants is constrained by firmware version and backplane connector type — a critical consideration when sourcing replacement units for installed machines. The series entered the mature/end-of-active-production phase circa 2018, with Trio's MC6 and P-Series platforms positioned as the forward migration path. However, the MC2 installed base remains extensive, and OEM machine builders continue to require exact-match replacements rather than platform migrations.
The following SKUs represent verified models within the Trio Motion Technology MC2 Series, classified by functional category:
Multi-Axis Motion Controllers
Digital I/O Expansion Modules
Analog I/O Modules
Communication & Fieldbus Adapters
Q: How are RFQ terms confirmed?
A: Quantity, required condition, documentation needs, destination and sourcing route are confirmed during RFQ review before quotation.
MC2 Series controllers present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane bus architecture and multi-axis servo loop firmware. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all MC2 units processed through our facility:
