The VACON NX series of AC drives and associated control/option boards represents one of the most widely deployed variable frequency drive (VFD) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, pulp and paper mills, and municipal water treatment facilities, the NX architecture has accumulated a multi-decade installed base that continues to demand active spare parts support. The NX platform spans power ranges from 0.55 kW to several megawatts, with a modular board architecture that separates control logic, I/O expansion, fieldbus communication, and power supply functions into discrete, field-replaceable assemblies. This modularity is the primary reason the NX series remains a preferred platform for lifecycle extension programs in facilities where full drive replacement is cost-prohibitive or operationally disruptive.
The VACON NX platform was introduced in the early 2000s as a successor to the VACON CX and earlier drive families. The initial NXS (standard) and NXP (performance) variants established a common hardware backbone: a control board handling parameter storage, keypad interface, and basic I/O, supplemented by option boards occupying dedicated slots (OPT-A through OPT-D on most frames). Early firmware revisions (pre-V7) used proprietary VACON fieldbus protocols; subsequent releases added native PROFIBUS-DP, CANopen, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU, and EtherNet/IP support through dedicated option boards. The NXI (industrial) and NXL (lite) sub-families followed, targeting specific market segments with reduced option slot counts. Danfoss acquired VACON in 2014; post-acquisition, the NX platform continued under the VACON brand with Danfoss part numbering cross-references introduced for procurement alignment. The NX series is now in a mature/end-of-active-development phase. Danfoss has positioned the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 and the VACON 100 series as forward migration paths, but NX hardware remains in production for spare parts and select OEM channels. VACON NX control and option boards incorporate multi-layer PCB designs with dense SMD component populations and proprietary ASIC elements that require specialized test procedures beyond standard continuity checks. (2) Powered bench test using a compatible NX drive frame to verify firmware boot sequence, parameter read/write function, and I/O channel response.
