Technical Dossier
The VM600 platform was introduced in the mid-1990s as a successor to the VM500 series, transitioning from analog-only signal conditioning to a hybrid digital/analog architecture. The original VM600 rack (RKS600) accommodated up to six I/O module slots plus one CPU slot and one power supply slot. Early firmware revisions (pre-2005) used proprietary serial backplane communication; post-2005 revisions introduced dual-redundant backplane buses compatible with Modbus RTU and later OPC-DA interfaces.
Between 2008 and 2014, Meggitt introduced the AMC8 (Advanced Machinery Controller) as the primary CPU module, replacing the earlier MPC4 and IOC4T controllers. This transition created a compatibility boundary: racks populated with pre-AMC8 I/O modules require firmware alignment when the CPU is upgraded. The VM600 system entered its mature/sustaining phase circa 2018, with Meggitt confirming continued spare parts availability through at least 2030 under long-term service agreements. New installations from 2020 onward are typically directed to the Meggitt Sensys or Brüel & Kjær Vibro SETPOINT platforms, but the installed base of VM600 systems globally remains in the tens of thousands of racks, sustaining a high-volume aftermarket for replacement modules.

The VM600 backplane uses a proprietary high-speed serial bus operating at 10 Mbps. Faulty bus termination or degraded edge connectors are the primary failure mode in field-returned modules. DriveKNMS applies a four-stage test protocol to all VM600 modules: (1) visual and mechanical inspection of PCB, connector pins, and conformal coating integrity; (2) powered bench test using a VM600 reference rack with known-good AMC8 controller, verifying module enumeration and firmware handshake; (3) functional signal-path verification — for I/O modules, live sensor simulation is applied across all channels and output accuracy is measured against factory calibration tolerances (±0.5% FS); (4) 48-hour burn-in at rated operating temperature (0–55 °C) with continuous data logging. Power supply modules including the VM600 RPS6U SIM-275D-24 (200-582-200-013) undergo additional load-regulation testing at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of rated output current, with ripple and noise measured per IEC 61000-4-11.
