Technical Dossier
The YOKOGAWA CENTUM CS 3000 is a field-proven Distributed Control System (DCS) deployed across heavy industrial sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, LNG terminals, pulp and paper plants, and offshore platforms. First introduced in 1998 as the successor to the CENTUM CS, the CS 3000 architecture established a standard for high-availability process control that remains operational in thousands of installations globally. Its modular field control station (FCS) design, redundant communication bus (Vnet/IP in later revisions), and broad I/O module library made it the reference platform for large-scale continuous process automation throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s. The S9185FA battery module is a critical maintenance component within this ecosystem, providing backup power to the FCS processor and memory retention during power interruptions.
The CENTUM platform has undergone four major architectural generations. The original CENTUM (1975) established Yokogawa's DCS lineage using proprietary serial bus communication. CENTUM XL (1984) introduced distributed I/O and expanded loop capacity. CENTUM CS (1993) transitioned to a Windows-based HIS (Human Interface Station) and introduced the V-net coaxial control bus. CENTUM CS 3000 (1998) retained V-net compatibility while adding Ethernet-based supervisory layers, a 64-node control bus, and expanded redundancy options. The CENTUM VP (2008) succeeded the CS 3000 with Vnet/IP (100 Mbps Ethernet-based control bus), but maintained backward hardware compatibility for many I/O modules, enabling phased migration. The CS 3000 is now in its end-of-active-production phase; Yokogawa continues to provide lifecycle support, but new module manufacturing has been discontinued for most SKUs. Battery modules such as the S9185FA are therefore classified as long-lead or allocation-controlled items, making third-party sourcing channels essential for ongoing plant maintenance.
The following SKUs represent the core module inventory for CENTUM CS 3000 field control stations, organized by functional category. Each module is a discrete line-replaceable unit (LRU) within the FCS chassis.

CENTUM CS 3000 modules use a proprietary backplane bus protocol that requires functional validation beyond standard continuity testing. DriveKNMS applies a multi-stage inspection process to all CS 3000 inventory: (1) visual inspection for PCB damage, corrosion, and connector pin integrity; (2) powered bench test using a CS 3000-compatible FCS chassis to verify module recognition and communication handshake on the V-net segment; (3) for battery modules such as the S9185FA, open-circuit voltage measurement and internal resistance check to confirm capacity retention; (4) firmware revision verification against Yokogawa's published compatibility matrix; (5) final packaging in anti-static ESD bags with desiccant, labeled with test date and technician ID. Modules that fail any stage are quarantined and not offered for sale.
