Technical Dossier
The Mitsubishi Electric MR-J3 Series is a third-generation AC servo amplifier platform engineered for high-precision motion control in continuous-duty industrial environments. Deployed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, automotive body welding lines, steel rolling mills, and large-scale chemical processing plants, the MR-J3 platform represents one of the most widely installed servo drive families in global heavy industry. Its SSCNET III fiber-optic network architecture enables deterministic, noise-immune communication at 150 Mbps between the controller and up to 16 axes, making it the reference standard for synchronized multi-axis applications where cable-induced EMI is a disqualifying factor.
The series covers output ratings from 10 W to 55 kW, accommodating everything from precision indexing tables to large gantry systems. The MR-J3 platform is fully compatible with Mitsubishi's MELSERVO-J3 servo motors (HF, HA, HG families) and integrates directly with the MELSEC Q-series and iQ-R motion controllers via the Motion CPU (Q17nCPUN, Q17nDSCPUN).
Mitsubishi's MELSERVO servo amplifier lineage progressed through clearly defined generations, each addressing the bandwidth and integration limitations of its predecessor:
MR-J (1990s): Analog command interface, resolver feedback, no network capability. Requires manual gain tuning. Now fully obsolete; replacement parts are sourced exclusively from secondary markets.
MR-J2 / MR-J2S (late 1990s–2000s): Introduced digital pulse-train command (PP/PG mode) and RS-422 serial communication. The MR-J2S added real-time auto-tuning and expanded the compatible motor range. Still operational in legacy machinery but discontinued from Mitsubishi's active production roster.
MR-J3 (2004–2015 active production): Introduced SSCNET III (fiber optic, 150 Mbps), 262,144 pulse/rev encoder resolution, advanced vibration suppression (two-degree-of-freedom control), and full-closed loop support via external encoder input. The MR-J3 is now in the mature/end-of-life phase; Mitsubishi has officially transitioned support to the MR-J4 and MR-J5 platforms. Spare parts and replacement units are available through authorized distributors and specialist suppliers such as DriveKNMS.
MR-J4 (2012–present): SSCNET III/H (600 Mbps), one-touch tuning, functional safety (STO, SS1, SLS) via MR-D30 safety option unit. Direct upgrade path from MR-J3 with mechanical compatibility on most motor frames.
MR-J5 (2021–present): EtherCAT and CC-Link IE TSN network options, enhanced cybersecurity, integrated STO without external option unit. Represents the current-generation platform for new installations.
For facilities running MR-J3-based systems, the primary compatibility concern is SSCNET III vs. SSCNET III/H: MR-J3 amplifiers cannot be mixed on the same fiber-optic chain with MR-J4/J5 units without a network bridge module (MR-J3-T10).
The following SKUs represent the core MR-J3 product range. Each unit is a standalone servo amplifier unless noted. Output capacity is stated as continuous rated output.

Mitsubishi Electric formally transitioned the MR-J3 series to the end-of-active-production phase. New unit procurement through standard distribution channels is increasingly constrained, with lead times extending to 26–52 weeks for certain capacity ranges. For facilities operating MR-J3-based production lines, unplanned downtime caused by amplifier failure represents a direct production loss that cannot be absorbed by standard procurement timelines.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of MR-J3 series amplifiers, including low-volume variants such as the MR-J3-200AN (MAX-20 C F12 EK 11, ref. 1910680) and other N-suffix full-closed-loop models that are rarely stocked by general distributors. Our sourcing network covers:
MR-J3 amplifiers present specific test challenges due to their SSCNET III fiber-optic interface, multi-mode encoder feedback paths, and integrated regenerative circuits. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all MR-J3 units processed through our facility:
